Lasting Impression

dragAttend pickup tomorrow to demonstrate human evolution from that so-1.5-million-years-ago upright stride to running gait with cleated foot.

Earliest modern gait found in ancient footprints
(AP Feb 26, '09)

More than a million years ago an ancient human ancestor walked across a sandy plain in eastern Africa, leaving footprints that scientists are now hailing as the earliest evidence of modern upright walking.

The footprints, dated to between 1.51 million and 1.53 million years ago, were discovered at Ileret, Kenya, researchers report in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

With a large toe parallel to the other toes, the prints indicate a modern upright stride, the researchers said. They are likely to have been made by the early hominid Homo ergaster or early Homo erectus. ...

Suit Up

brnwuitAdvice I hope you won't need.

The Chronic offer fashion advice to interviewees in
How to Dress for Your Interview

...if you're interviewing for a job, you might want to pay some attention to the way you dress. Because interviewers are going to make judgments about you, fair or not, based on how you present yourself. And what you wear is part of your overall presentation.

...suggest that male candidates...If you're determined to wear a suit, go with something in an earth tone, like brown or tan.

...earth tones (brown, olive, tan) are appropriate for jackets and slacks.

Your shoes should be black (with navy or gray slacks) or brown (with brown, olive, or tan slacks.)

Socks should match your slacks, not your shirt or jacket.

Grandiose

Someday, maybe even as soon as tomorrow, you'll thank me for this post...

Playing an active role in the health of (grand)children [02.23.09]

There is an expression that says: "a grandparent is a parent who has a second chance." Indeed, many grandparents feel less stress than when they were a working parent and now have more time and energy to spend with a grandchild.

As a grandparent, your special relationship with a grandchild provides a unique opportunity for you to be a positive role model. You do not replace the parents, but you can reinforce their message when it comes to teaching young people about lifelong healthy habits.

Wondering how to be a good role model in the lives of your grandchildren? Consider these points:

Get moving together. There is lots to do outside, including kicking a ball, walking, hiking, biking and throwing a Frisbee. You might plan a special outing such as bowling, swimming, or skating. If you haven't been very active, remember to start slowly and gradually increase activity levels. ...

The role of grandparent is a special one, not the least of which is helping a younger generation enjoy health for life!

Unhockeyed

The SlapChop(R) product is a marvel [Vid (2:01)], but could use a more Frisbee-friendly name.

Some suggested names:

> Lotsa.Cuts
> Cut.Much.Then.Eat
> Multiple.Cuts.Give.Throwing.Options

snciKeep away from big-mouthed children [NewSci]

A bought Frisbee has a label on it saying: "Not suitable for children under 3 years because of small parts." The only part involved is the frisbee itself, which has a diameter of over 20 centimetres . Observation: "There must be some pretty large-mouthed under-3-year-olds around."

If the 8"-mouthed persons do exist, they'd excel at catching like a dog.

    Fa¢elift for a Penny

scentIn honor of today's bicentennial birthday of the 16th prez, the US Mint redesigned the very brownish one-cent coin (penny).

... the 100-year-old Lincoln penny is actually an American artistic milestone: Its debut marked the first appearance of a real person on a US coin...After the nation’s birth, putting a president on a coin “smacked of royalty,” says an expert, so George Washington opposed his own metallic representation.

Instead, generic symbols of liberty appeared on money, which by the 20th century Theodore Roosevelt pushed for the use of an image of Lincoln by a favorite artist. When the pennies appeared in 1909, they were so popular that some sold them for 25 cents. Today, despite their waning appeal, the Mint will update pennies with new backs showing 4 stages of Lincoln’s life:
  • Early Childhood (KY)
  • Formative Years (IN)
  • Professional Life (IL)
  • Beard Growing Days (DC)

    H: I got -- I -- look, I got five pages --

VS: Give me -- give me some examples.

H: A Frisbee park -- a Frisbee golf course, Greta?

VS: Well, why is he saying -- why do you think he's saying that, no earmarks? Why is he saying no earmarks?

H: This is like an Orwellian speak that I can't really figure out. For example, they say that people that don't pay taxes are gonna get a tax cut. I define that as welfare. If they -- if they make a Frisbee park -- a Frisbee golf course -- I don't even know what a Frisbee golf course is."

Per a blurb in WoHe, the brown spice is:
    > A true wonder in terms of health protection
    > Research-linked with reducing blood sugar & cholesterol
    > Found to increase alertness

What's brownesque, heady, yet crazy? This recommended intake of cinnamon... Dr. Kulze recommends .5 -1.5 teaspoons (1-2 stix) a day!

    Grounded Research

brwnThe science behind this was recently proven ...
the likelihood of being covered in
brown (mud) from the slippy field on Saturday caused me to be more stable.

Can color improve your performance? (Feb 7.09)

Did you know that color has a quick & powerful impact on the choices you make every day? According to six different research studies in the Journal o' Science ... In stress-management combining the five senses creates a powerful relaxation synergy, for example, combining music with exercise or deep breathing with visualization. See the color chart to give meaning or make changes to the way you color your world.

    * Green is pervasive in the
natural world. It promotes healing, symbolizing growth & fresh, new life. In most cultures spring is the season of optimism.
    * Purple rests in balance between
red & blue. It inspires you to feel regal &empowered.
    * Brown is earth-toned and grounding, generating stability.

    Pantydisc

Mr. Headrick is rolling in his grave...

How to make a Frisbee out of Pantyhose

Step 1 - Cut the legs of the pantyhose off of the feet & panty.
Step 2 - Put the legs portion onto your legs and roll down to form a tight disk.
Step 3 - You will have six tight coils when you are finished.
Step 4 - Cut 5 strips measuring 5" by 1/2" out of the feet or panty of the hose.
Step 5 - Tie the six disks together to form a ring (see image). You can decorate your frisbee with the permanent markers at this point.
Step 6 - Throw it just like a normal(?) plastic frisbee.

Things You’ll Need (if you can't find a normal plastic disc in your closet, car, briefcase, fridge, basement):
    > 3 pair of pantyhose, stockings or tights.
    > Permanent marker(s)
    > Scissors

    FrisGReeN

pg13The green frisbee channel provides some green tips...

4 Tips for a Greener Game of Frisbee

Tossing the Frisbee around is one of the great idyllic green pastimes - picturing people playing Frisbee almost instinctively conjures up a scene filled with parks, hippies, and picnic tables. But those days are long since passed—now Frisbees are happily and un-ironically tossed on college campuses, Ultimate Frisbee games are arranged, disc golf courses are popping up all over, and it's a perfectly respectable way to pass an afternoon at the beach or at a park.

But just because the hippies' era has passed doesn't mean we can forget about being earth-friendly when we play. So here are some quick tips to green that round of Frisbee:
1 - First, get a green disc—like one of these Frisbees that are made from
recycled retail materials, or these Frisbees made with 60% post consumer recycled plastic.
For disc golf, check out the
Reflyer, a disc specially made recycled material (also post consumer recycled plastic).
2 - Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during your game- not wasteful, disposable bottled water.
3 - Carpool to the park or better yet, bike or walk.

Enjoy the game - it's classic green.
