First Scheduled Pro Ultimate Doubleheader

Ernie Banks' exclamation "Let's play two!" can now be applied to pro ultimate. The American Ultimate Disc League becomes the first pro ultimate league to schedule a doubleheader. Montreal Royal is scheduled to play Rochester Dragons at 11:30am and again at 3pm on Sunday, June 21st.

The one-game-per-day format has been used since the AUDL started in 2012, while back-to-back games - 1 game on one day, 1 game the next day - has also been utilized around the league.

The second game on Sunday was not part of the original AUDL schedule; it is a makeup game of a previously weather-cancelled May 9th match. Read a games preview.

Additionally, Montreal becomes the first pro ultimate team (AUDL) to schedule three games in two days - set to play one against Toronto Rush on Saturday and two versus Rochester on Sunday. All road games.

AUDL games are played in 12-minute quarters. So, Royal are projected to play 144 minutes (2 hours:24 minutes) of pro ultimate over this weekend.

After 9 weeks of the 2015 American Ultimate Disc League season, teams are fighting for a playoff spot while 2 East Division teams will battle for their first win of the season. Philadelphia Phoenix visit Rochester Dragons on Sunday, June 14 in a matchup of winless teams. Game. Of. The. Week!

One team will leave with their 1st W of the season...

Rochester Dragons (0-6) are on a 19-game losing streak dating back early into the 2014 season. The Dragons' last win was their very first game of the 2014 AUDL season - on April 18, 2014 - against Philadelphia, and have lost every game since then.

Philadelphia Phoenix (0-8) have not won a game in 2015, and their only 2 wins in 2014 were against Rochester. UPDATE: After a Saturday loss to Toronto, Philadelphia is now (0-9).

Updated Logo for Rochester Dragons

The prof Ultimate Rochester Dragons lost to the New York Empire on Saturday by a score of 27-8. After 24 minutes of play ij their AUDL game, the Dragons scored only twice, while the Empire posted 15. The Dragons scored 6 more times in the second half, for a total of 8 goals.

For anyone who watched the game, you noticed the Dragons were, well, dragging a bit.  This weekend's college regionals may have impacted their roster, but we could not resist this "update" to their logo...

The Dragons play again today (Sunday, April 27) versus DC Breeze.

Review: Rochester Dragons (AUDL)

Part of the series critiquing the professional Ultimate team logos and nicknames.
Team: Rochester Dragons

Disc within logo?: No. // Ultimate element in team name?: No.

Background: The Dragon is one of the most powerful and lucky Chinese Zodiac signs.  Dragon is a karmic sign, which means they will experience more than a few extreme highs and lows in their lives. The downside to the Dragon is that some are wildly unrealistic with their big plans, while others are simply all talk or show and no action.

An amateur football team - WNY Dragons - are also located in western New York. "Western New York's Professional Ultimate team" was formerly known as the Buffalo Hunters until they moved to Rochester and became the Dragons in December 2012. Previous Dragons logo:
First impression(s): The Mortal Kombat Tournament on ice? The Mortal Kombat Tournament on ice.

Eli's Eval: Nothing wrong with a mythical creature as your mascot. Like the Indianapolis Alley Cat, this dragon has a head and tail, but no body. Not worried about legs, this dragon is closer in origin to Ouroboros, the world serpent, with no visible legs, just a head a tail and wings. The dragon is flat but is still given a good amount of articulated detail in the wing and tail and horns. The circular dragon logo is iconic enough, if a little embryonic from being forced into a circle.

The type has been give the app store treatment, in some instances, which results in a metallic feel that has no relation to the dragon logo unless maybe it is meant to represent armor or hoarded silver. The font choice is modern and reminiscent of the ROBOCOP logo, which also has very little to do with creatures of fantastical origins. The blocky font is illegible at smaller sizes so they could definitely benefit from some sort of "RD" monogram treatment. They did not leave any space in or around the dragon for it, so it would have to be a separate element, much like the current type treatment.
