Deschutes Brewery Named Title Sponsor of AUDL 2020 Season

Brewery not named Surly to be title sponsor of AUDL 2020 season.

Deschutes (pronounced Da-Shootz) Brewery was announced as the presenting partner and official beer of the American Ultimate Disc League in 2020. AUDL 2020 jerseys will have the Deschutes insignia on them as well. Ultiworld reported the 1-year deal was low to mid six figures brokered by Maestroe Sports & Entertainment.

Deschutes, the 10th largest craft brewery in the United States, is headquartered in Bend, Oregon - a state where AUDL plans to start a team. They also have a presence on the East Coast with a tasting room in Roanoke, Virginia. The etymology of the brewery's name is the Deschutes River, in central Oregon, which is a major tributary of the Columbia River.

Minnesota Wind Chill are currently owned by Surly Brewing, the 34th largest U.S. craft brewing company. Surly is also a long-time supporter of masters ultimate teams in the Twin Cities which are named after, sponsored, and suds supplied by the brewery.

Current advertising shows Deschutes Brewery appealing to ultimate players:

Only one team - Detroit Mechanix - out of the 21 AUDL teams in 2019 season play at a high school, which will definitely impact Detroit's ability to serve Deschutes selections; Detroit played at Grand Rapids Christian High School in past seasons.

Of note, Cleats and Cufflinks podcast [episode 44; April 2016] indicated that a Major League Ultimate would not accept a "vice" brand (e.g. beer, alcohol, tobacco) as a jersey sponsor because of inappropriateness message to youth. They could sponsor the league, just not the jersey.  MLU folded after their 2016 season.

Better Budweiser Label

Below is another concept for Budweiser's renaming promotion. What is more American than playing ultimate?

Morphing USA Ultimate onto a Budweiser Label

Under the influence of Budweiser "beer" renaming summer brews to America, here's a concept if Budweiser were to transform their label to the governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States.

Frisbeer Packaging

A product that makes one-handed grabs much easier.

This project which won the Prize of Slovak Design Center on Young Package Design Competition 2014 evokes the same reuse attitude as a Frisbie tin.  Frisbie's were used to carry pie and the empty tins were then tossed around.
Frisbeer packaging is made from tough and durable cardboard, which makes it easy to carry up to three cups with one hand. The slots used for grasping and positioning the cups, plus the disc shape, are also the main aerodynamic elements necessary for the Frisbee to fly.

World Frisbee Disc Championships 1978

The finals of the 1978 World Frisbee Disc Championships (WFC) were held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Thirty-six years ago! Ultimate was not played [watch here], but other popular disc sports of the times were, such as: Disc Golf and Freestyle.
Wham-O 40 Mold [via]
The much smaller font for the word "disc" is most likely due to the event being a promotional event by Wham-O, who only sold Frisbees.

Coors Brewing Company, as a sponsor of the WFC event, distributed these branded Frisbees to attendees. Sunday, August 27th, was the last day of the 3-day event.

William Tell-ing with a Frisbee

Which do you prefer to see for a disc to be aimed at?
A) An orange cone atop Nick Cannon wearing a bike helmet with a faceguard, or
B) A full beer balanced on a partygoer's head

MLU Raises the Bar

The MLU Shop upgraded their team drinkware, which nicely flows into MLU's "strategy" for their 2014 season. One downside - the 2013 plastic ones (58 oz.) hold more liquid than the 2014 glass version (16 oz.).

Summary of MLU Strategy

In Ultiworld's interview with Major League Ultimate's commissioner Jeff Snader, a few items of note.

Future
  • Expansion from the existing 8 teams - specifically to the midwest - is expected in 2017.
  • Seek to compensate players $4800/season by 2017-2018.
  • Expand the season from 10, to 16, and then to 24 games by 2018.
2014 Season
On tap for the MLU 2014 season:

"Draft" plan
Snader: "So that's the number 1 thing we wanted to improve - stadiums; their location, what they're able to provide. And, hopefully in many of them…we know our fans like to drink beer, so hopefully, we can have more beer flowing at games. We really want to make it a leg up in terms of the party that's to be had at our games. And that's the focus right now.

Later in Ultiworld's Deep Look, Charlie asks, "What are some things that you're really hoping to do differently that you learned from last year?"

Snader: "...really, it was...BEER. And, allowing people to have fun, and drink, and have a good time….You want to go watch a sporting event, and if it's dry, it's kinda like going to a party that's dry. It can still be fun, but I think we all know it's a lot more fun to party and have a few drinks and have fun with friends. So we really want to enable that. And, that's been one of our big things. Can we get alcohol at our games, so that people can…enjoy."

SludgEA Legs

slakesBeer, Sludge? OK! ... Beer sludge? No, thank you.

Beer Sludge to Fish Food [cnn]

Biologist Andrew Logan turns waste from breweries into food for farmed seafood.

Logan resides in Idaho Springs, Colorado. Perhaps some of his inspiration came from several locally brewed beers at the Tommyknocker Brewery and Pub. His company Oberon FMR has developed a bacteria that can turn food based waste water to high protein flakes. Mr. Logan and company are on to something. The CNNMoney.com story reports that “By law, breweries and foodmakers must find safe removal solutions for wastewater; hauling it away and composting it (or, in winter, storing it)...” That gets expensive.

After using waste water from the New Belgium Brewery in a successful pilot project the project is getting legs, or should we say fins. A recent contract with another Colorado based brewery, MillerCoors will supply 5,000 tons of sludge that will be turned into 6,000 tons of food flakes.

What is beer sludge? It’s not spent grain. Spent grain goes directly to supplement animal feed. Beer sludge is a combination of yeast, protein and organic matter from grains and the fermentation process. It all get’s drained out of tanks and beer lines and is reduced to a sludge. As an organic and unstable sludge it is as an unpleasant a mixture as the name implies. You can’t just rinse it down the drain if you’re producing a lot of beer.

Way More Advanced than Beer Pong

Frisbeerfreebeerisgoodee

::Rules::
There are a number of variations on the rules of the game. Detailed below are the most common guidelines; however, you may chose to modify them to your liking:
First you need two posts or pipes roughly to the chest in height and spaced a decent frisbee toss apart stuck squarely in to the ground.
Next, place an empty beer bottle on the top of each pole. (You can improvise some other object as long as both poles get the same object for fairness.)
Each team of two players stands next to one pole, facing each other. Each player must be holding an open beer for the duration of the game, including while throwing and/or catching the frisbee. (This is known as the “Beer-in-Hand Rule”.)

Choose the throwing order/turn order. Teams should alternate turns throwing and defending, each team getting one throw at a time. A team may only score when throwing, and when one team is throwing the other team is ‘defending’. In order to count, all throws must be deamed “catchable”, and the thrower must not step in front of their pole.

The objective of the game is to knock the beer bottle off the opposing team’s pole either by direct hit, hitting the pole, or just tripping up your drunken opponents. The defenders aim is to prevent the bottle from hitting the ground while at the same time catching the frisbee, and not spilling any beer. Defenders cannot attempt to prevent the frisbee from striking the pole or bottle. One throw at a time, one team at a time, alternating teams and players. Wash, rinse, repeat.

::Points::Games are played to 21 points.

1 point – Failure to catch the frisbee, but only if it hits the bottle.
1 point – Failure to catch the bottle.
1 point – Spilled drink, regardless of defense/offense.

Loser finishes their drink.

Beer-y Footwear

foot.mouthIt's (officially) DC Beer Week, what ever will you wear?

The brainchild of Rogue Shoes and Rogue Ales, two Pacific Northwest institutions that specialize in total comfort and relaxation. The pliable, full-grain leather uppers are hued like popular Rogue beers. The style is an unlined slip-on cruiser, so you can wear them sockless - & even collapse the heels for slipper-like slip-on comfort. Water and stain resistant (in case you spill at the pub) and the vamps have elastic gores for good flex when you try to stand up and actually walk. A cool finishing touch: the slip-resistant outsoles have a beer bottle pattern that makes neat tracks in the dirt. Imported.

Colors: Mocha Porter; Smoke Ale; Brown Ale; Pale Ale.

Beersbee

With skool back in session & OBX just around the corner, we all best be in the know.

Drinking Games: Post-Sec Edition A few more ideas to keep your study buddies on their toes at the back-to-class beer gardens (08.28.08):

Let me preface this by stating an obvious (yet often unheeded) word of caution: drink responsibly....With that out of the way, I’ll stop lecturing you like an ornery professor and move on to a topic that’s fun for the whole family: drinking games. ..., so here’s a brief rundown of some tried and true inebriation sports.

Beersbee

September usually has its share of warm days, so do yourself a favour and get outside to enjoy the lush, verdant campus before it turns into a barren wasteland of frigid, suicide-inducing wind and hip-shattering icy sidewalks. To play, you’ll need two small tables placed 40 feet apart, an empty beer bottle on each table, a Frisbee, and four players. The object of the game is to knock down your opponent’s beer bottle, causing the opposing team to chug their drinks. In addition, the Frisbee must be caught on each turn; if it hits the ground, the team who missed it must take a drink. The game is usually played with a few other rules, such as taking a drink for dropping or spilling your drink (the game must be played with a drink in one hand), stepping over the imaginary line in front of the table, handing off the Frisbee (it must always be tossed), missing a turn (throwing alternates between players), bouncing the Frisbee off the ground in front of the opponents, or throwing way off course.

Made Out of Beer

Fear of Jewelry Stores Be Gone!!

Hand cut and fired circle jewelry from beer (brown) recycled glass bottles. Those reincarnated glass bottle necklaces sure are shapely in an aerobie kind of way.

Home brewing, yes; sifting thru your recycling bin for glass shards to be used as a hand-crafted gift, no.
