Brodie Smith Signs with Jacksonville Cannons

After one AUDL season in Dallas, Brodie Smith returns to his home state of Florida to sign with Jacksonville Cannons for the 2017 AUDL season.

Brodie started his AUDL career with Indianapolis in 2012, was on the Chicago Wildfire roster for 3 seasons (2013-2015), and with the Roughnecks in 2016. Jacksonville will be Smith's 4th AUDL team. Jax tried unsuccessfully to lure Brodie to Florida back in December 2015.

Over a year later - on February 17, 2017 - Jacksonville announced the signing of Brodie Smith, who is listed as living in Fairview, Texas.

My AUDL Fan Experience (Chicago, IL)

A noon game on a Saturday is not an ideal time/day for a pro Ultimate game because 1) the target audience (ulti players) is probably playing ultimate, and 2) midday traffic in Chicago is a real bear. This 12pm game on May 3rd was the earliest starting time on the Chicago Wildfire's 2014 schedule, against a team - Detroit Mechanix - who just 15 hours before finished their first game of the weekend 300 miles away in Cincinnati, Ohio.

After strolling through Roscoe Village, I eventually arrived to the campus of Lane Tech High School. The lack of signage along the busy Addison Street seemed like a missed opportunity to promote the pro Ultimate game - present and future. Furthermore, some signs could have helped me find the main entrance (it was in the alley in between the school and the stadium).

I bought a $12 ticket and then grabbed a mini schedule and a tri-fold color Wildfire brochure/program. I followed the path around the north end of the stadium passing by sponsors' booths. Zipcar doled out some sweet (free) swag - wristband, sunglasses and a mini-disc. Generic stadium-food was also available for sale.

Thankfully, the announcer over the speakers was my first clue that I was not crashing a pre-game scrimmage. The stadium was really empty.

Lane Tech Stadium is a well-positioned venue against the backdrop of the high school's Gothic style red brick. Lane Tech's field was used for some parts of the classic 1986 movie, Wildcats, starring Goldie Hawn. Finding seating on the west-side bleachers, you can get a gorgeous view capturing the field and downtown's skyline. Another cool sighting was the number of "Helton - 00" jerseys worn by youth fans.

View from Chicago Wildfire's stadium
As a fan sitting watching a sporting event, the wind was welcomed in the warm sun. As a fan sitting watching ultimate, the wind was a nuisance impacting the flow of the game.  There were a total of 66 turnovers in the entire game -- Chicago 30, Detroit 36. Additionally, Detroit had 17 drops while Chicago had 14; and, this seems low. Another low number was the attendance, which I generously estimated at 75.

Detroit had a chance to be competitive in this game, but lacked discipline within the playing conditions. I'm no Tom Skilling, but would have described the weather as: windy with gusts. Kind of like playing at the beach where there's a consistent wind, but with moments of heavier gusts which ruin any floaty throws and make you second guess your abilities of throwing a plastic disc. The Mechanix could not catch the disc one-handed, nor should they have tried. Attempts of 15+ yard throws by the Mechanix were usually incomplete, yet they kept trying to throw them. Overall, the Mechanix had no set offense. The Wildfire were more patient and effectively utilized cross-field hammers to propel their offense. The game was hard to watch (and enjoy).

There was not a lot to cheer about. The top 3 biggest cheers from the crowd group of people at the game, were (in order):
1. During one of the between-quarters, children younger than 8 years old were tossing discs into a lacrosse goal. They had decent form by keeping the disc low to the ground. When they scored into the net, it was exciting!
2. Detroit scored only 2 points in the 2nd half, so when they were close to the end zone, it was thrilling!
3. Goose's superman layout for the Wildfire's 15th point, it was super!

Wildfire won 18-9. No, 16-9. Okay, 18-9! At the end of the bland match, a few Wildfire players greeted fans as they exited. The Wildfire store tent suffered from premature "dismantlation" less than 10 minutes after the game's end, so I didn't have time for an extensive look. Though, the store did have a wide variety of baseball hats.

What I paid $12 for lacked "professional" game elements. Regardless of the day/time and attendance, I expected the Wildfire to offer more for the paying fans. More than the chance to watch an ultimate game in a stadium.

##

I'd be remiss if it wasn't mentioned that Brodie Smith was on the sidelines for the Wildfire. There were a few questions for people in the stands about his presence.
Q1. Will Brodie play today?
A1. No, not in the game. Yes, throwing short tosses into the wind for almost-self-caught flight action on the sidelines. Yes, tossing during warm-ups while out of uniform.

Q2. If Brodie is not playing, then is he scheduled to do trickshots during halftime?
A2. No, he did not do any trickshots for the fans. Actually the only halftime "entertainment" was 4 guys playing Spikeball on the field, none of whom uttered the words "dark horse."

Q3. Will Brodie suit up for the Wildfire today, or even this year?
A3. Yes! He actually donned the Wildfire jersey for a team picture at the end of Saturday's game.

Highest-paid Professional Ultimate Player

The mystery of how much Brodie Smith is paid might be solved.

In today's professional sports world, player salaries are public knowledge (e.g., MLS, NBA). While pro Ultimate players can expect these types of benefits and earn weekly bonuses (MLU), there's one name in the ultimate game who's been rumored to get paid to play.

1. In April 2013, Al Reiger's write-up indicates "The Wildfire pay [Brodie Smith] a modest salary plus travel expenses, and a bonus if they win in the playoffs."

2. SBNation.com's July 2013 article referenced Brodie's earnings like this: "His injury has kept him off the Ultimate field, but that hasn’t slowed his income, since he makes a healthy living off advertising from his trick shot videos, personal appearances and clinics, and a line of equipment and apparel. By most accounts, he is the highest paid performer in Frisbee history."

3. Cameron Brock - an Indianapolis AlleyCats teammate of Brodie Smith during the 2012 AUDL season - posted an entry "All-Night Practice: A house full of Cats" on his personal blog in February 2013. Cameron writes at a time when AUDL rosters were being finalized, and he makes a specific mention of Brodie's player salary.
...First thing is first, congrats to everyone that has made the team so far. We have added many players this year that did not play for the Cats last year. I believe more than half of our team will end up being new players, so there is a lot of turnover from last season's roster. This is for a few different reasons. The first reason is the addition of other teams. Chicago now has 3 of our former players (Goose, Brodie, and Rook). Goose is from Chicago, Rook is his best friend and Brodie... well Brodie is getting paid a lot of money to play there. And when I say a lot of money, I mean more than the average person makes in a year. $40,000. Part of me says "that's really dumb." The other part of me says "I hope this is a sign of things to come."
Anyways I will talk more about Brodie making that absurd amount of money in a later post. This post is dedicated to the Cats! ...

Job Description: Pro Ultimate Player

The Salt Lake City Lions - an expectant 2014 AUDL expansion team - have posted pro ultimate player expectations and benefits. In summary, free/discounted swag, don't expect to profit, free travel, meet "celebrity Ultimate players," sell autographed gear, and be a role model.

Here's the copied text from SLCL's website:

"What's in it for me?"
  • All Travel and Hotel accommodation paid for:
    • As of right now, most Away Game travel will be by large vans/tour buses. Some distal venues may require we travel by air, and the AUDL is currently working on league-wide airline sponsorship. This may mean air travel for all Away games – no promises on this, though.
  • Jerseys and Shirts paid for.
  • We are looking into being able to cover hats and cleats through sponsorships as well.
  • Ability to play as the best, against the best, with fans cheering for you on a national stage!
  • A chance to win a large cash prize at the end of the year:
    • In the 2013 AUDL Championships, the Toronto Rush took home $20,000 of the $25,000 Championship purse.
  • A percentage of team profit will be awarded to each player – do not expect thousands of dollars the first year. However, the amount everyone takes home will be determined, in large, by how well each player aids in promoting the team and sport of Ultimate Disc.
  • Small stipend for Away Games to help pay for things like food.
  • Team MVPs Cash Award (amount TBD by season).
  • Ability to travel and see various cities around North America for free
  • Discounts from VC Ultimate
  • Various discounts and special promotions from future sponsors/vendors of the Salt Lake Lions.
  • FREE tickets for your friends and family to all Home Games. Away Game tickets may be available upon request.
  • Ability to meet, and play against, celebrity Ultimate players like Brodie Smith.
  • Potential to become the next household name in Ultimate Disc, and sell your autographed gear and replica jersey on the Salt Lake Lions' website for profit
  • Become a part of History: you could be on the first-ever Professional Ultimate Disc team in Utah!
  • Chance to be someone a child looks up to, and wants to be like!

"What's expected of me?"
Below is a rough outline of what we are expecting from each player. Some of these things will change over time, though this is relatively what we're anticipating requirements to be:
We know that many of you will have familial, spousal, work and other time-related commitments to adhere to. These will be taken into account, and we will work with all future Lions players to the best of our abilities.

GENERAL: Have superb knowledge of the official AUDL Rulebook. Maintain a professional appearance online, and in person. You will each be a voice for the Salt Lake Lions, and we want to make sure you are received as respectable and reasonable human beings. Promote the sport, league and team to the best of your abilities. Be timely, honest, direct and sincere. Listen to, and apply, directions and information given by the coaching staff. Take good care of yourself: mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

PRESEASON: Attend practices laid out by the coaching staff – this will likely be 1 or 2 times each week for a few hours, and will begin in early 2014. Be a part of various special occasions: player signings and appearances, charity events, media releases, conferences, etc. This will most-likely be by request of the Owner/Coaching Staff and/or player availability.

SEASON: Attend practices laid out by the coaching staff – this will likely be 1 or 2 times each week for a few hours, and will begin in April, 2014. Attend 75%-100% of all Home and Away games. There should be around 8 Home and 8 Away games (16 total) for the season: April – July. The vast majority of games will be played on the weekends (Fri-Sun).
We realize not everyone will be able to make each game: we will work with each athlete individually on this. **A schedule will become available in early 2014 as venues are chosen by each team in our division.
** Be a part of various special occasions: player signings and appearances, charity events, media releases, conferences, etc. This will most-likely be by request of the Owner/Coaching Staff and/or player availability. Do your best to win while maintaining Spirit of the Game.

POST SEASON: Continue to present yourself in a professional and personable manner. There will be fans following you, and it is important to uphold an image parents can feel comfortable having their kids admire. Be a part of various special occasions: player signings and appearances, charity events, media releases, conferences, etc. This will most-likely be by request of the Owner/Coaching Staff and/or player availability.

Coke Commercial Mimics Frisbee Community

This new Coca-Cola commercial shows drinkers in the activity of throwing disc-shaped objects (the Coke bottle cap) similar to what students did with empty pie tins. Commercial highlights include a few fingertip grabs and a surfer layout reminiscent of the "boat catch" from Brodie's bridge throw.

Watch video below & then compare concepts.

Pro Ultimate Treatment

In the evolving world of professional Ultimate, teams are changing locations and updating their image, while the "professional" aspect is still being figured out. For me, the game of Ultimate - regardless of level  - is still about respect. Players are the obvious intended target of Spirit of the Game. With professional team owners investing in the sport, this makes for a changing dynamic. Mixing $pirit may cause SOTG to be redefined; I just hope it's not at the expense of Ultimate players.

Just last month, two of the top 3 vote-getters in the 2012 AUDL MVP race - Jonathon "Goose" Helton & Brodie Smith - announced where they planned to play in the 2013 season. Both Goose & Brodie played for Indianapolis AlleyCats in 2012, and were free agents.

On January 18, Brodie Smith announced his intentions of playing the 2013 AUDL season in Chicago with Windy City Wildfire.

The next day (Jan 19), the AlleyCats posted a respectful response to Brodie's announcement.
"With the announcement yesterday that Brodie Smith has signed with the Windy City Wildfire we wish him nothing but success in the future..."
Screengrab of AlleyCats' Facebook post.
A few days later on January 22, Goose Helton announced on Facebook:
"Although the official announcement isn't until tomorrow, the 'Cat' is out of the bag. For the 2013 AUDL Season, I will be playing for the Windy City Wildfire!..."

AlleyCats' modus operandi has been to show respect for their players. For example: back in August 2012, after the MVP announcement, AlleysCats President Thom Held commented:
"Goose is so deserving of the award he's is a tremendous player, leader and teammate. Of all my experiences with the AUDL it is meeting people like Goose that make this such a great expereince [sic]."

Well, it has now been 16 days since Goose's announcement. Unlike their treatment of Brodie Smith, the AlleyCats have yet to publicly issue any well-wishes to the league's first MVP - Jonathan "Goose" Helton.

UPDATED (per Goose): "[Michael] Potter (2012 AlleyCat Head Coach) did wish me well as the first comment in my Page [announcment]."

So Many Throw Aways

Brodie Smith, a Univ of Florida Ultimate player, captures on video his insistent behavior to throwaway frisbees rather than to recycle.
