How the Yellow UltraStar Became the Official Beach Disc at WCBU 2017

In March 2017, the World Championships of Beach Ultimate (WCBU) announced the official game discs for its international beach ultimate competition in France would require a fluorescent yellow UltraStar. Here's the backstory of how the bright yellow disc was adopted for beach ultimate play.

BULA
Sludge made an inquiry to BULA boss Patrick van der Valk and he referred me to Mike Palmer (previously of ulti.tv).

Patrick warned:
"I hope you are not expecting a research paper :)"

Patrick explained that Mike Palmer, from Australia, did a very basic heat absorption test by putting a white, yellow and pink disc in the Aussie sun for 10 mins. Pink was most floppy then white and surprisingly yellow was most firm! Good enough for us because it is still a Discraft. Filming test (done by Mike as well) showed that the yellow looked much better on camera. IMHO the WCBU proved that last point. I didn’t hear any complaints yet from players so that is a positive data point.

Discraft
I was curious about the 10-minute Aussie sun/heat test of Discraft ultimate discs, so I contacted the disc manufacturer.

When I asked Discraft directly, they replied: "No hard data for you, but just as the white of the arctic reflects light & heat vs bare dark tundra, so goes a white disc vs a dark."

According to the Ulti Show (Ep 1), the Discraft representative spoke to why a different colored disc was being used at WCBU.  "Beach Committee contacted Discraft in fall 2016 asking their expert opinion about a different colored disc for filming that might show up better.  Yellow, orange, and pink discs were all tested as well as white. And yellow ended up being the most...(pause)...easiest to find in the sand. Yellow Discraft UltraStars were then experimented with at the Australia Beach Championships."

Caz Malone then asked about an incident when the yellow disc in the first WCBU 2017 match "got bent out of shape."

Pad Timmons (Discraft) explained: Someone fell on the disc. But the heat...it's really, really warm here. Heat absorbs with color.  The more color you add, the higher the temperature the disc actually is.

Interview with Mike Palmer
I was now more interested in the absorption test, so I contacted the person responsible for conducting the heat tests in Australia.

SLUDGE: What kind of ground were the discs on when your test was performed?
Mike: On grass.

SLUDGE: What was the temperature during the 10-minute test?
Mike: Temp 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) in full sun.

SLUDGE: What was done first: watching the colored discs on video or the heat absorption test?
Mike: The absorption test was conducted at Aussie Mixed Nats in October 2016 in Sydney before the film test.

SLUDGE: Were you surprised at the final "floppy-ness" results?
Mike: I handled the disc and I was surprised the yellow was less floppy that the white. I had someone else feel them as well to confirm.

SLUDGE: What else should I know about the disc absorption test?
Mike: It was not very scientific but it is a fair test!

My thoughts
I support the effort to discover a different ultimate disc to better the ultimate game on sand - for players and spectators.

1. Future experiments of sun effects on discs should be conducted in the environment of the disc use - on the beach/in the sand.
2. For spectating, the yellow disc blends into light tan colored sand, rather than standout for visibility.
Yellow disc (circled) barely visible on the sand.
Example:  This pass at the 12-second mark gets completely lost.
In flight yellow disc completely lost during up field pass.
3. Beach tournament directors should consider:
    1) Storing game discs in a shaded or in a cooler and not on/in the sand to reduce sun effects on the           plastic disc.
    2) Introducing a new game disc at the start of the 2nd half.

2017 World Championships of Beach Ultimate Adopts Fluorescent Yellow Disc for Competition

The World Championships of Beach Ultimate (WCBU) announced the official game discs for its international beach ultimate competition on June 18-25 in Royan, France. In addition to the standard white plastic Discraft UltraStar, WCBU is requiring a fluorescent yellow UltraStar. Both discs are the standard 175-grams weight.

The primary reason for adopting yellow fluorescent discs is to be fan-friendly in being able to attendees and stream viewers to track the disc. All broadcasted games will be played with a neon yellow disc. Non-streamed games will have the choice of playing with the white or neon yellow disc.

The idea of a flying disc specific for beach ultimate is not new. WCBU cites "heat absorbing research" to support their choice of bright yellow over black, bright orange, dark red, red, royal blue, light blue, or sparkle blue UltraStar ultimate sportdiscs. Specifically:
Heat absorbing tests show that the fluorescent yellow disc stays firmer than other colors when exposed to the sun, while in-competition tests showed that there is not a significant impact on play using a fluorescent disc.
The tournament host recommends teams to "play and practice with yellow disc before the WCBU starts."

Tennis plays with a yellow ball yet is played on a green or blue hard court. AVP (beach volleyball) plays with a white and yellow ball.

WFDF Seeking Official Disc Supplier for Next Two Years

It's possible a Discraft UltraStar will not be the official disc at WFDF ultimate tournaments the next two years.

In September 2016, the World Flying Disc Federation announced an RFP (which is more of an Invitation to/for Bid since only select companies were asked to bid) seeking a disc supplier for 8 WFDF events in 2017 and 2018.

Three other disc companies were invited to bid - Daredevil (Canada), X-COM (China) and Yikun (China). The notice about the RFP was posted on September 27 with the deadline being October 6, 2016. Ten days (8 business days) is not necessarily a long time for a company to properly prepare a detailed bid. Discraft won the previous (2015-2016) WFDF disc contract.

Discraft also owns 5 of the 8 approved "Championship" disc molds; they are: Discraft UltraStar: Westland Mold (Hot Stamp & Supercolor Center); Web Mold (Hot Stamp & Supercolor Center); and Discraft UltraStar, Web Mold II (Hot Stamp). The other companies invited to bid each have one approved mold; Daredevil: Gamedisc (Hot Stamp), X-COM: Ultimate Standard (Hot Stamp), and Yikun: UltiPro (Hot Stamp).

WFDF Ultimate Championship Events (2017-2018)
2017
All African Ultimate Club Championships
World Championships of Beach Ultimate
Asia-Oceanic Ultimate & Guts Club Championships
Pan American Ultimate Club Championships

2018
World Under-24 Ultimate Championships
World Ultimate Club Championships
World Masters Ultimate Club Championships
World Junior Ultimate Championships

WFDF's decision is expected by early December 2016.

Foul Called on The Economist's Mention of Ultimate Frisbee

Back in August 2016, The Economist published an article about how tech leaders stayed fit. Mentioned was Sergey Brin who known as an enthusiastic ultimate player. The ultimate reference from the article:"Sergey Brin, Google's co-founder, pushes his body to the limits in a variety of sports: skydiving, rollerblading, roller hockey, "ultimate Frisbee" and high-flying trapeze."

The double quotation marks used with the words "ultimate Frisbee" did not sit well with Andrew Work, Editor-in-chief of Harbour Times (Hong Kong).  So, he wrote this matter-of-fact Letter to the Editor which The Economist published on August 27th.

Work's Letter to the Editor titled "Stamina a requirement" reads:
Ultimate Frisbee is a real thing, not an oddity requiring quotes around it as if it were a strange metaphor of a sport (Schumpeter, August 13th). It is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. The World Flying Disc Federation manages global tournaments and enforces the World Anti-Doping Agency's regime. Some in the sport cautiously avoid the trademarked Frisbee name and are pushing for the sport to be called Ultimate. Indeed, the disc officially used is not that of Frisbee's trademark owner, Wham-O, but is typically a Discraft manufactured disc. It may be time to update your style guide to include this magnificent sport. It is definitely time to surrender the quotes. It truly is Ultimate.

Frisbee Anniversary Celebrated Today

According to the History Channel, on this day (January 23) in 1957, "Toy company Wham-O produces first Frisbees."

Hey, this blog supports having an annual day to celebrate the invention of the disc that made the sport of ultimate possible. But, let's be clear that January 23rd was not chosen because of what one source allegedly says happened today in 1957. This blog is always looking at an opportunity to celebrate the disc, but not at the expense of revising history.  January 23rd works well, plus it's easy to remember...1/23.

Fact checks on History's claim:

1. In 1957, Whamo-O was known as Wamo (no "h," no hyphen) Manufacturing Company.

2. The flying plastic disc was called "Pluto Platter" in 1957 and later renamed "Frisbee" in 1958.

3. The disc shown rolling as a transition during the history lesson's video portion is not a Frisbee(R); it's a Discraft Ultra-Star.

4. There is no citation listed on this event of machines rolling out a first batch of discs - even when asked. Moreover, I contacted History via their support link on their website in 2015. No reply. No update.

Honestly, it's highly unlikely that Wamo (Wham-O) a small toy company in the late 1950's executed this contract AND started production of the toy. Perhaps a 21st Century toy corporation could/would do that.

So what actually happened on the 23rd day of January in 1957? Here is actual evidence of what occurred on January 23, 1957, regarding a plastic toy that became the Frisbee and the company that would later be known as Wham-O.

Redesigned Discraft UltraStar

Discraft's ubiquitous plastic flying disc got a SuperColor makeover which covers the entire face of the ultimate disc.

Beyond the design update, you will notice the disc name has officially changed from "Ultra-Star" to "UltraStar" - a change implemented in 2014. Discraft's logo and USA Ultimate's logo will now appear on the discs along with its weight. For those counting at home, that's 2 logo'd discs on the disc itself.

Per their website: "The hot stamped version with original logo will continue to be available to those who request it."

Discraft Drops the Hyphen

The Ultimate Disc Known as Ultra-Star Removes Hyphen From Its Name, according to Discraft.

The renaming of the Hall of Fame Ultimate disc officially took effect in 2014. Gone is the punctuation mark that spent decades separating the words "Ultra" and "Star." This popular plastic flying sportdisc with the hyphenated name was born with a hyphen in 1981. "UltraStar" will take over for its former name.
