Westcoast Women's Professional Ultimate Announced

Westcoast Women's Professional Ultimate will debut in southern California with games in May and June 2019.

The schedule for the logo-less league along with participating teams were announced yesterday. Per their website, the Westcoast (<--one word) Women's Professional Ultimate [WWPU] is "an unprecedented competition series to bring professional women's ultimate frisbee to the West coast." WWPU is not (yet) associated with the Premier Ultimate League (PUL), though PUL is listed as a sponsor.

The current schedule billed as "2019 Southern California women's professional ultimate series" reveals 3 WWPU teams - Los Angeles Ninety-Nines, San Diego Wolfpack and Seattle Cascades. Rules, disc type, streaming, and rosters have not been posted.

WWPU website indicates Portland and Vancouver as additional sites without a team name reveal. The Cascades are planning to participate in a northwest women's ultimate series against teams from Portland and Vancouver.

A total of 8 games between 5 teams are estimated to played as part of the 2019 season of Westcoast Women's Professional Ultimate.

AUDL 2017 MVP Candidates

With the AUDL season over, it's time for some MVP chatter. In collaboration with Stats Of The Game (SOTG), analysis was run to determine 2017 candidates based on the stats of 2016 MVP Dylan Tunnell.

SOTG assembled a visual reviewing the 2016 candidates.
As noted by SOTG, player's with a high number of assists coupled with a high completion rate is rare. Based on regular season stats of the 2016 MVP [18 Goals/66 Assists, 472 completions (92.7% completion rate)], comparable 2017 stats were posted by Mark Burton (Seattle Cascades) with 36 Goals/81 Assists, 326 completions (91.8% completion rate). Also in the conversation would be:
  • Pawel Janas (Chicago Wildfire) 9 G/85 A, 933 completions (92.6%)
  • Jon Nethercutt (Raleigh Flyers) 13 G/72 A, 472 completions (94.4%)

Regular season stats [via SOTG]

Only one of these players - Nethercutt - was on a team that made the AUDL postseason — Raleigh Flyers went (13-1) to win the regular season South Division title, but lost in the South Division Championship to Dallas. Adding to Nethercutt's 2017 MVP résumé is having the most "recognitions" of any AUDL player; he was recognized as Best Handler, Best Hucks, Best Flick and Best Hammer. As a comparison, Janas played on the (3-11) Chicago team in the Midwest Division and claimed 2 recognitions while Burton's Seattle Cascades went (7-7) in the West Division. A strange coincidence when reviewing stats with SOTG is Nethercutt's regular season completions totaled 472 which is the exact number of completions as the AUDL MVP in 2016.

San Francisco FlameThrowers Finally Win a Postseason AUDL Game

Top-seeded San Francisco earns their final four spot with a decisive victory over Los Angeles in the 2017 West Division Championship game.

The FlameThrowers are arguably one of the most successful franchises in American Ultimate Disc League history. In their 4 AUDL regular seasons, the FTs have won 40 of their 56 games.; a .714 blazing winning percentage in the West Division. And, the San Francisco AUDL team has posted a winning record in all 4 regular seasons and also made the playoffs all 4 seasons. They have claimed the regular season division title twice - in 2016 and in 2017.

The AUDL postseason is a different story; the FT's fizzled in the division final in 2014 to San Jose, petered out a first round playoff game in 2015 to Seattle, and got doused in 2016 - again - in the division final to Seattle. The FlameThrowers had never won a postseason game until yesterday's 33-22 win.
SF FT W-L History [as of 8/14/2017]

With San Francisco's win, they advance to American Ultimate Disc League Championship Weekend VI with a chance to add to their postseason win total. The #4-seeded FT's play the #1-seed Madison Radicals in Montreal on Saturday, August 26.

San Francisco Wins First Pro Mixed Ultimate Game (Cascades Cup 2017)

San Francisco FlameThrowers traveled to Seattle to play in the (Seattle) Cascades Cup. FlameThrowers won 17-16 (10-8 HT) over Seattle Cascades. This historic game took place on the same date as the inaugural AUDL games were played exactly 5 years earlier.
The 1st quarter of referee'd ultimate started with these mixed teams going 4/3 ratio (4 male/3 females), then alternating to 3/4 in the 2nd quarter and following the same format in the second half. Sam Kanner (San Francisco) started the game with the opening pull. Mark Burton (Seattle) scored the game's first point with an assist from Hana Kawai. Mac Taylor threw the FlameThrower's first goal to Brett Petersen. Former DC-area player Antoine Davis had a late game block to preserve the FlameThrowers' win and take home the $500 cash prize.

Madison Radicals Offer Support to Atlanta Falcons

After Atlanta Falcons blew an 18-point lead at halftime and a 25-point lead in the 3rd quarter to lose Super Bowl LI on Sunday, the AUDL team in Madison quickly offered their support to Atlanta's NFL team.

As you might recall, Madison Radicals (14-0 regular season; 1-0 post season) lost in the AUDL semifinal game at home in August 2016.  The Radicals entered the home game, which was held on Madison Radicals Day, with a 31 home game winning streak and had never lost a home playoff game at home. The loss was Madison's only blemish to a perfect regular season (14-0) and winning the Midwest Division championship.

Madison held a 5-point lead at half, but lost by 1 goal in regulation to Seattle Cascades.

Trent Dillon, Conscientious Rejector of Pro Ultimate

Trent Dillon recently shared this principled rationale for not seeking to play in the semi-professional ultimate league. Trent played for Philadelphia Spinners (MLU) in 2014, won the 2016 Callahan Award with Pitt, and, most recently, won a World Championship at WUGC 2016 and played with Seattle Sockeye in USA Ultimate's 2016 club season.

Below is text of Trent's email to Seattle Cascades' invitation to tryout for the AUDL 2017 season:

"I want to let you [know] that I will not be trying out for the Cascades this year and why.

I have not played in either pro league since 2014. My rationale for abstaining has been consistent and singular over the last few years, but have done a poor job of communicating this rationale to the pro league owners and managers in my cities - hence this email. I'm fearful that pro league (and now just the AUDL) are leading the sport down a path that will result in  the loss of important cultural/social values in ultimate. Self-officiation and equal opportunity for men and women have been bleakly represented in the AUDL's current product, and I'm worried that if the AUDL continues to match economic projections without these values, the league's investors will only support a product that looks like what it was built upon—all men, refereed, on a wide field.

I understand that I'm totally preaching [to] the choir here. Although I'm not familiar with what happens behind closed doors-I'm thrilled that you and your siblings have been working for these changes from within the league. However, I just don't see how my efforts as a player can help in this regard. In fact, I think the best (and perhaps only) way to encourage AUDL reform is if men's players abstain from playing and voice their concerns publicly  and also directly to their owners. It seems like AUDL is still dependent on the ultimate community for revenue; if the community can manage to negatively impact the league's bottom line in the name of gender equity and self officiation, it would inspire the league's executives to rethink their dismissal of our community's values in their product.

If the AUDL were to clearly provide a plan or intention to incorporate self-officiation and equal opportunity for women into their league, I would support the league wholeheartedly. However, after five years of the same product, AUDL has done little to show me that they are interested in actually making changes to the league that reflect the preferences and values of the community..."

Seattle Cascades Split From Sockeye for AUDL 2017 Season

Seattle Cascades broke up with Seattle Sockeye.
After a couple of years of partnering with the elite men's club ultimate team in Seattle, the American Ultimate Disc League team has decided to operate independently.

As partners, Sockeye and Cascades shared the same captains, coaching staff, and similar rosters. Throughout the entire season, [Cascades GM] Xtehn worked closely with the Sockeye leadership to plan and execute roster decisions, fitness planning, and on field practices.

Seattle Cascades won the Western Conference Division in 2016 and finished 2nd to Dallas Roughnecks in the 2016 AUDL Championship. Meanwhile, Seattle Sockeye tied for 5th in USA Ultimate's Triple Crown Tour.

Of the three signed players (Mark Burton, Khalif El-salaam, Adam Simon) for the 2017 AUDL season, only Burton played with Sockeye in 2016. With the shutdown of the MLU, the Cascades have a larger talent pool to pull from including players from Seattle  Rainmakers and, perhaps even, from the Portland Stags; in addition, to a wealth of Seattle-area club players from the mixed and women's divisions.

Seattle AUDL Team Aligns with Sockeye

Casc-eyes?  Sock-ades?
Seattle's AUDL team, Cascades, announced a partnership with the men's club ultimate team, Sockeye. The cooperation net goes beyond the playing roster by capturing coaches, too.

Per the announcement: "Sockeye and Cascades will share the same captains and coaching staff. Most of the players who join the Cascades will transition to Sockeye in June, after which the two rosters will be fairly similar. Throughout the entire season, [General Manager] Xtehn will work closely with the Sockeye leadership to plan and execute roster decisions, fitness planning, and on field practices. "

A similar partnership between Seattle Cascades and Seattle Sockeye happened in 2015.

Review: Seattle Cascades (AUDL)

Part of the series critiquing professional ultimate team logos and nicknames.

Team: Seattle Cascades

Web: http://www.seattlecascades.com/ // twitter: @SeattleCascades

Representation: City // League: AUDL

Disc within logo?: Yes. // Ultimate element in team name?: No.

Background: The Cascades are a beautiful mountain range that extends from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. Since their first recorded exploration in the late 18th century by George Vancouver and his team, the Cascades have been filled with both history and folklore. Their logo reflects the strength, mystery, and vitality of the Cascades.[via]

Upon buying the Seattle AUDL franchise, the Titcomb Family (of Five Ultimate fame) retired the previous team name - Raptors.

First impression(s) from SLUDGE: Chewbacca, the legendary Wookiee, joined the Blue Man Group!  Hey, is that a hidden "5" on Casey's cheek?

Eli's Eval: This may be the single-best and most cohesively designed branding system of any professional ultimate team in either league. The wordmark is custom-designed lettering with a mountain range substituting for the letter A. The city name is san serif but blocky enough and italicized on the same angle as the team name. The points of the mountain range echo nicely with the extruded and pointy serifs on each of the letters that have them.

In addition to the wordmark there is a separate yeti icon that is delightfully monochrome in rich blues and blacks with bright yellow eyes and a highlight on the pug nose and one tiny sharp tooth that call attention to themselves and move the eye through the design. The official team discs have this icon printed playfully small on the plate which serves as a testament to the design, because it holds up at that size and also printed entirely across the chests of their light jerseys.

It works large. It works small. It works in color. And, I imagine it would work in black and white. It doesn't rely on any design gimmickry like gradients or heavy strokes. The wordmark can be separated into city or team name without losing any legibility or effectiveness, and they also work well together.

Values of Seattle Cascades

The Seattle Cascades — Seattle's AUDL pro Ultimate team — recently published their organization's mission and values on their website. This Seattle sports team is owned by the 5 siblings (3 brothers and 2 sisters) who founded Five Ultimate apparel company. The Cascades are scheduled to play their first American Ultimate Disc League season in 2015.

Read their words and you will immediately grasp their inspiration of recognizing history of the sport, appreciating the sport's population and understanding their larger role as a "professional" sports franchise . Their strongly (and beautifully) worded values statement reads like an equal rights manifesto reinforcing their belief in self-officiated ultimate:
"As we work to build an outstanding ultimate program, we carry with us a set of core values: integrity, community, and athletic excellence.
As a subset of these core values, we believe in a world where integrity and athletic excellence go hand in hand, and male and female athletes have equal value and opportunity to compete.
To get there we have to reshape societal norms around gender, sports, and honorable competition. We're making progress on this vision by focusing on officiation and gender issues in our sport. Through our partners, sponsors, athletes, and community we are excited to play a role in building a better sport, not just a bigger one."
Officiation (AKA refs):

Via the webpage text: Refereed games may be necessary for ultimate to be a spectator sport with fans online and in stadiums. Meanwhile, for all other areas of competition, self-officiation is ideal. In fact, the good sportsmanship that thrives throughout ultimate is in large part due to the self-officiated roots of all current elite, professional ultimate athletes. We will actively promote the self-officiated version of the sport to everyone our franchise touches. Furthermore, we will work within the AUDL to ensure that the rules and officiation systems in place are serving the current and future best interests of the sport.

Gender (i.e. mixed teams; women pro players):

Via the webpage text: The incredible growth we've seen in the past 10 years is thanks to women's ultimate, men's ultimate and mixed ultimate. Meanwhile, AUDL and its franchises are focusing solely on the men's division. By putting our time and money towards this asymmetrical representation of the sport, we are weakening the gender balance. Thus, it is our responsibility to be advocates and action takers for the mixed and women's divisions so that our sport grows sustainably over the long-run.

Sightings Reported of Seattle Cascades Logo

Seattle's AUDL team,  the Cascades, launched their team logo via Facebook, and...it bypassed any of these options...to, instead, go with a Sasquatch mascot.

At first glance, the creature has Chewbacca (wookie) features:
via
Others had similar takes on Seattle's hairy mascot...

Oh, Seattle also posted a stylized city, name and nickname logo, with peaks of the Cascades (mountains) and a disc-in-motion image in place of the "A" in their nickname:
