From Christy:

Fortunately, we will have the opportunity to celebrate (again!) Joe’s birthday during a days-long bacchanal, sludge style (i.e. the hardest drug is crack chips), in just a little over a month.

The house is rented; good weather has been reserved; and children are being trained to bring beers to those non-strangers that request them.

Now is the time to confirm your attendance and, if you have not already, send me your money. The final check is due soon. Without the final head count, I can’t give the final cost. So let’s start there. Please respond by end of the week and I’ll send out exact cost by next week.

The surf is calling . . .

Chris.mas in August

After 15 years of riding the same old trusty bicycle, NICH's bike broke up with him frame finally cracked. For a few days last week NICH reverted to a mere bi-ped. That did not last long as he is now on a fancy, shiny, new bicycle replete with his aged rack & kickstand.

His new bike blew a tire to show it didn't approve of being accessorized with older parts. His old bike would never have done that!

Cowabunga

I predict someday in the very near future this tweener turtle will bore of her new skater wheels & be begging for a new shell. If she's still into recreational-sport-equipment-body-modification, then a frisbee would do wonders I tell yas!

Disabled turtle finds romance after getting wheels
(8/18/08)
JERUSALEM - Officials at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo say the 10-year-old spurred tortoise, Arava, has begun mating since being fitted with a custom skateboard to overcome paralysis of her hind legs. The 55-pound turtle is unable to move herself forward with her front legs alone. So the zoo's staff built her a metal board with two wheels that can be strapped to her stomach...

Rook takes Pawn, Go Deep

I typically explain ultimate frisbee is a sport that borrows elements from football, soccer & basketball; & of course played with a plastic Frisbee disc.

Explaining chess is also played during the game, might be not believable. Read how extra components are being suggested. "New Wave chess, for extreme players only ."

Bionic

Happy thoughts to Gayle who is having foot surgery today.

A Californian middle school teacher & who likes to play tennis experiences an untimely parachute failure and the accident renders her with an extensive injury. The government takes the opportunity to turn her into a government project and replaces her most damaged limbs and parts of the body with bionic machinery and parts... making her an all powerful crime fighting machine with super strength and hearing. Her signature was her jumping...over small buildings, walls, cars, she cleared them with no problem. running machine.

Special Comment

The fall season has raised play options for Sludge - League or Pickup? Similar to the election fever, you should weigh "change" vs. "more of the same." Which option is which is still up for debate. Add your benefits/drawbacks via Comments.

Leeg
+Brown plays together
+Minimal monetary cost
+Potentially freesup Saturday mornings
+Structured games to 15
+Competitive elements (i.e. defense is played)
+Requires a minimum # of Sludge to play
+Fields are (sometimes) close to a playground
-Playing versus foe-ish teams
-Field conditions unknown
-Fields not near Mi Rancho

PU
+Brown playing together [on the same field]
+Free
+Same time; usually same place
+Access to restrooms
+Play until you don't wanna
+No more Lake Fairfax
+Non-committal (show up when you want/can)
-Parking issues
-Level of play is hit-or-miss/hot-or-not
-No 5:2 rules

Queue Up

From Charlie:
Q1: Is you in, or is you out for the fall season?
Q2: Are you healthy and non-pregnant?
Q3: Will you be in town for most games?

On a related note, there is a movement in having a constant Saturday morning pickup game and not joining the league, so I guess you should let me know your feelings about that, too!

Win some, Lose some

Congrats to Joe for riding the coattails of a championship team his accomplishment during the Sludge off-season. His summer team, the Northern Reticulated Chipmunks, won the Rec League Tournament. Do they or don't they exist?

In contrast, team "Wookies" with Sludgers CH, David + MicHael (stacked team) went winless [0-3] in the 1st day of the Summer Tournament.

Follow the fumes of idling tour buses to play summer pickup.

After a successful time trial back in July, Sludge seeks to increase participation for the upcoming olympiatic-ish games in August.

10-yard dash: Chase the volleyball, typically follows the pool pommel horse.
Basketball: Little room for error; could be mistaken for "Shotput."
WAIT-lifting: How long can your sensitive skin handle the lovely chlorine waters before being shamed into helping BBQ some hot dogs & vege burgers?

Back in Brown

After a weekend of some Sludge hanging at the NJ beach, Big Brown, the 1-5 favorite, bounced back from his last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes by winning the illustrious Haskell Invitational @ Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

In a too-close-for-comfort return, Big Brown staged a sensational rally covering the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.31 & beat 20-1 long shot Coal Play by 1-3/4 lengths Sunday.
