What is Jimmy Mickle's Autograph Worth?

Over Championship Weekend of AUDL 2017, Montreal added a limited edition cap to their online store. Montreal's Embroidered Eagle snap back baseball hat is normally $21.74 CAD. A similar hat with an autograph of Jimmy Mickle (of the Dallas Roughnecks) was increased to $30.44 CAD. That's a 40% mark up.

Here's a close-up of Mickle's #23 autographed cap:

Based on Montreal Royal's merchandise pricing, Mickle's autograph is valued at a whopping $8.70*.

DC Breeze Scoreless for Nearly 3 Hours, Still Win Home Playoff Game

The D.C. Breeze were scheduled to play host to the Montreal Royal on August 11th. The AUDL playoff game started after 7PM on Friday night and was abruptly postponed due to inclement weather (lightning, lightning and rain, and rain).

Not all DC sports teams (ahem, Nationals) with Friday night games chose to stick out the weather delay and play their game as scheduled.

DC's playoff game started after 7PM on Friday night. Montreal scored first and then the DC Breeze were held scoreless for nearly 3 hours in their game on Friday, yet the Breeze won 28-16. DC would eventually find the scoreboard at 9:51PM and outscore the Royal 28-15 after the long weather delay. The game ended at 11:35PM.

Friday's Playoff scoRECAP

DC's first round playoff win advanced them to Sunday's AUDL East Division Championship game which the Breeze lost 26-29 (13s HT) versus the Rush in Toronto.

D.C. Breeze's 2017 AUDL season is over. D.C. finished second in the AUDL East in the regular season with a (10-4) record like in 2016 and, similarly, won 1 playoff game and lost the division final to Toronto.

Rumble Cup Saga

Evan Lepler chronicled this story in Week 15's Tuesday Toss. Below is a reprint of Lepler's story.

By beating the Royal in the final meeting of the regular season, the Rush retained the "Rumble Cup," a trophy that the two franchises have exchanged as a symbol of the rivalry. As Toronto GM Scott "Shooter" Hastie revealed on Twitter, it was clutch that the Rush took care of business, because the transfer of the trophy would have been difficult considering that Raina had absentmindedly forgot to bring it to the game.

Raina explained what happened. "Shooter's tweet is accurate," he admitted.

"I woke up late from a nap prior to our game and in my haste to get ready, I left the cup on the mantle. So in the huddle before the game, I reminded the guys of the importance of the matchup and then added 'Also, we have to win this game because I left the Cup at home!' Not quite 'Win one for the Gipper,' but it got the job done so I'm sure Knute Rockne would approve.”

One wonders if Raina’s girlfriend and housemate was rooting for the Royal on Saturday, as she apparently is not a fan of the Cup being prominently displayed in their shared home.

"The Cup proudly sits on the mantle in our house mainly because my girlfriend hates it," said Raina. "It stayed there all of the last offseason and the plan is to keep it there indefinitely. She tries to take it down every now and then, but I always put it back."
Rumble Cup [via]
The Rush and Royal match up two more times in the 2017 AUDL season.

Though I'll refrain from offering any relationship advice, I will note that the Rumble Cup could be at stake again before long if the Royal can find their way into a matchup with the Rush in the playoffs. If that transpired, the Cup would have more riding on it than ever before.

Montreal Royal Prove Ultiworld Wrong

In December 2016, Ultiworld published '2017 AUDL Championship Weekend To Be Held In Montreal, Quebec' and mentioned: "However, this will also be the first time since the inaugural 2012 season that the league will hold the Championship Weekend in a city where the home team will not be favored to make the playoffs."

Ultiworld's flippant statement was probably relying on the history of AUDL East where Toronto Rush are perennial champs, the New York Empire are recurrent playoff contenders, and the D.C. Breeze most recently made the playoffs. The AUDL 2017 season was still 4 months away and rosters had not yet been finalized. Montreal's first and only appearance in the postseason was in the AUDL 2015 season.

Toutefois!

Seven months after Ultiworld's diss, the Montreal Royal (8-4) earned a playoff spot after Week 14 and are "officially in the playoffs!"

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Adds More Ultimate Swag

Today is Canada Day (Fête du Canada) and how best to celebrate?

For PM Trudeau, you show off your newly acquired ultimate swag. This time it's an ultimate shirt from 1 of the 3 Canadian teams in the AUDL East Division.

Curious as to why Montreal did not send one of their outstanding AUDL jerseys. Also, wonder if Trudeau realizes he's holding a jersey shirt made by American-based Disc Store? Not to mention a franchise in the (again) American! Ultimate Disc League.

2017 AUDL Championship Weekend To Be Played at Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard

One of the questions posed in February & March was: where exactly in Montreal will the AUDL Championship Weekend be played?

We now have an answer by way of the Montreal Gazette.

Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard (CSCR).

CSCR is the new home field for Montreal Royal for the 2017 AUDL season and the sports complex was site of the friendly between Iris and Brute Squad in the fall of 2016. CSCR reportedly is a grass field with a seating capacity of 6,000.

The Royal moved away from Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, a ~25000 capacity venue with a turf field, where the Montreal Alouettes (Canadian Football League) play their home games.

Toronto Rush Versus Montreal Royal: An Unlikely AUDL Rivalry

Is Toronto Rush and Montreal Royal the best rivalry in the AUDL East?

In the 9 games between Toronto and Montreal, the Rush have won 5 times and the Royal have won 4 times.  Toronto won the first three matchups while the Royal have won the 4 of 6 from the Rush. In the Royal's 4 wins, their average margin of victory = 2.25; the Rush's average margin of victory = 8.6 (5 games). Of note, Montreal's first win against Toronto stopped the Rush's incredible 30-game consecutive win streak.

What makes this series so fascinating is how unbeatable the Rush are against all other AUDL East teams since 2013 when Toronto went undefeated. Ottawa Outlaws have never beaten Toronto. Philadelphia Phoenix, never. New York Empire, never. Montreal, who joined the AUDL in 2014, now has 4 wins versus Toronto.

Toronto has an absurdly impressive (55-6) regular season record in the AUDL East since 2013. The D.C. Breeze (2 wins) are the only other AUDL East team besides Montreal Royal (4 wins) to claim a victory against the 4-time AUDL East Division Champion Toronto Rush.

The Rush-Royal series, which is dubbed the "Rumble Cup," has a trophy at stake which looks like:

The 2017 Championship Weekend is scheduled later than any previous AUDL championship.

2013: Aug 3-4
2014: July 26-27
2015: Aug 8-9
2016: Aug 6-7
2017: Aug 26-27

If AUDL is still planning to start in early April, then the AUDL's 6th season will be the loooooongest season in its history.

Boston Brute Squad Visits Montreal Iris in Offseason Friendly

The Montreal Royal (AUDL) in association with Montreal Ultimate Association, the Quebec Ultimate Federation and Montreals Ultimate Feminin program are hosting a friendly match between Boston Brute Squad and Team Quebec (Iris) on October 15th. Brute Squad has won back-to-back USA Ultimate Nationals Championship in 2015 and 2016. Iris took 2nd at the 2015 Canada Ultimate Championships and finished 13th at 2016 USAU Championships. Boston is (3-0) all-time versus Iris during the 2015-2016 club seasons.

WHEN: Saturday, October 15 @ 7pm ET

WHERE: Complexe Sportif Claude Robillard

WATCH:

The event at Complexe Sportif Claude Robillard is being hyped "to crown the best North American team!" Over 300 miles (~5 hour drive) separates these two cities.

The Link published an article about the sports event.

From the article: "Back in Quebec, Audrey St-Arnaud thinks that Iris media visibility of any kind would be great simply for the grassroots —who could only follow the team through Facebook and Twitter—can have "something to aspire to."

St-Arnaud: "The little boys in elementary or high school have something to aspire to but the little girls, they have Iris but it's on social media. To have a real game that will be filmed, that will give them something to aspire to because we have had good players in Quebec for years but equity in the media is not the same thing." St. Laurent, who is also part of the Quebec Ultimate federation’s board of directors, wants to stress that equity is different from equality.

"We don’t aspire to have the same things the men have, we want a visibility that’s proportional," she said.

Meanwhile, Iris will look to continue to grow on the American scene and help grow the sport of women's ultimate in partnership with the semi-professional men's ultimate team Montreal Royal.

Another subtle sign of equity for the Quebec ultimate federation backed team is volunteering at each other's games. Women's teams would volunteer to sell beer at Royal games but the roles will be flipped as Royal players will return the favour and sell beer for the exhibition game.

Royal Announced New Head Coach, First Female HC in Pro Ultimate

Guylaine Girard
In October 2015, Montreal Royal announced Guylaine Girard as their Head Coach [entraîneure-chef] for the upcoming 2016 American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) season.

Girard was an assistant coach for the AUDL team in 2015 with a specialization in "mental preparation." The Royal went (9-5) in the 2015 regular season, which earned them a playoff spot in the East Division.

Girard is also a captain of Vintage, the 2014 world champion Women's Masters club ultimate team based out of Montreal.

With this promotion by the Montreal Royal, Guylaine Girard becomes the first full-time female head ultimate coach in a pro ultimate league. Félicitations, Guylaine! Montreal has a penchant of being pioneers.

First Scheduled Pro Ultimate Doubleheader

Ernie Banks' exclamation "Let's play two!" can now be applied to pro ultimate. The American Ultimate Disc League becomes the first pro ultimate league to schedule a doubleheader. Montreal Royal is scheduled to play Rochester Dragons at 11:30am and again at 3pm on Sunday, June 21st.

The one-game-per-day format has been used since the AUDL started in 2012, while back-to-back games - 1 game on one day, 1 game the next day - has also been utilized around the league.

The second game on Sunday was not part of the original AUDL schedule; it is a makeup game of a previously weather-cancelled May 9th match. Read a games preview.

AUDL Week 11, 2015
Additionally, Montreal becomes the first pro ultimate team (AUDL) to schedule three games in two days - set to play one against Toronto Rush on Saturday and two versus Rochester on Sunday. All road games.

AUDL games are played in 12-minute quarters. So, Royal are projected to play 144 minutes (2 hours:24 minutes) of pro ultimate over this weekend.

Pittsburgh Thunderbirds Borrowed Jersey Design

Pittsburgh Thunderbirds unveiled their 2015 jerseys and once again borrowed their design from 2 AUDL teams. Having multiple teams with bird logos is expected, though it's egregious to have two lightning bolt teams. Identical jersey design happened last year, too; albeit for teams in different divisions.

The Radicals jersey features one colored sleeve with a descending lightning bolt, and so does the Thunderbirds jersey.

The Madison jersey wrapped-around lettering on the lower right hip as does the Thunderbirds jersey.
AUDL Jerseys (upper left, clockwise): Madison Radicals, Pittsburgh Thunderbirds,
Pittsburgh Thunderbirds, Montreal Royal.

Pittsburgh's jersey has a diagonal band running from shoulder to hip, similar to the Montreal jersey .

TORONT-0, No Longer

After 30 consecutive wins – (16-0) in 2013 regular season, (2-0) in 2013 playoffs, and (12-0) in 2014 regular season, the Toronto Rush lost a game. This is the Rush's first ever loss in the American Ultimate Disc League. Their winning streak started April 20, 2013 with a win against DC Breeze and ended on July 5, 2014 with a 19-20 loss versus Montreal Royal.

Thirty games is the longest winning streak in pro Ultimate history. The Rush winning streak spanned a total of 63 weeks, including their post-season run of winning the 2013 AUDL Championship.

Review: Montreal Royal (AUDL)

Part of the series critiquing the professional Ultimate team logos and nicknames.

Team: Montréal Royal

Web: http://royalultimate.com // twitter: @MontrealRoyal

Representation: City // League: AUDL

Disc within logo?: No. // Ultimate element in team name?: No.

Eli's Eval: Nice simple layout: shield with diagonally crossing arm, with circle overlaid on that. From there we encounter a few problems: the circle icon is too small in relation to the overall shield, plus the white and brown are similar in tone and blur together from afar. The crossbar is at such an angle that there is much more space on the upper left than there is in the lower right so both the "R" and "M" end up being small and crowded close to the circle in the middle. If they removed the diagonal, dropped the circle and put "RM" on one line at the top this would read much more clearly.

The odd "O" seems completely out of place and has no relation to any other part of the design or, as far as I know, to Montreal itself, or royalty. If it has no reason to be there it is just distracting and should go. Lastly, the curved "Montreal" above seems to be on a different curve than "Royal" and the top of the shield.

:Eli's Grades:
Overall Grade: B
On Logo: B
On Typography: B-

Background by SLUDGE: The team is named after the elevated park, Mount Royal Park, located west of downtown Montreal, Quebec. Also, it's a nod to the Montreal Royals - a former minor league professional baseball team - that launched the careers of players like Sparky Anderson, Roberto Clemente, Tommy Lasorda, oh, and Jackie Robinson. Read the Royal's highly detailed explanation.

First impression(s) by SLUDGE: The aigu accent mark above the "e" could have been replaced with a bladey disc, but it wasn't (and that's okay). The single lines on the shield's right edge makes it looks like a brush. The use of a bird distorts the team name (put a bird on it?), though "eagle" does rhyme with "regal". The eagle image has resemblance to the DC-area Eagle Bank.

What are you thoughts on this AUDL's team name & logo?

AUDL Expansion: Montreal, Quebec

Zut Alors! Montréal has been reported to be a new team in the 2014 AUDL season. This city in Québec province would be a new addition for the AUDL 2014 expansion list. The AUDL has yet to formally announce any new teams for their next season.

Impact and Alouettes will not be the only franchise in Montreal part of a North American professional league next spring, since Montreal is about to join the ranks of a professional ultimate frisbee league.

The team, whose name should be determined next week, will be part of the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL), one of the two ultimate professional circuits in North America, the other being the Major League Ultimate.

"We looked at both options and ultimately, we chose AUDL, who assured us greater control over the image of our franchise," said Patrick Gratton, one of the seven co-owners of the franchise....

The seven co-owners, who are all passionate about ultimate and some are in business, currently trying to determine where they will play their home games. The Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard, the training ground of the Impact and the Olympic Stadium are among the options considered so far.
