The Sky is Red met its crowdfunding goal last year. The documentary aims to film the untold story of the push for gender, race, and class equity in the growing world of ultimate frisbee from 1968 to the present. The film will help REDirect the focus of what has historically been images of white men playing the sport of ultimate.

Flatball Film Releases Movie Poster
"Flatball - A History of Ultimate" which crowdfunded in spring of 2014 took another step by releasing its movie poster. Wasting an opportunistic pun, no flicks are shown on the movie poster.
Yes! You read the correctly - Alec Baldwin is narrating!
Prominently pictured is Pat King (New York, New York) readying to spike the disc as Brent Russell (San Diego/LA Iguanas) sits on the ground.
The Flatball globe insignia appears to be borrowed from the Wham-O 165-gram World Class Frisbee.

Documentary: 175 Grams
This documentary about ultimate Frisbee as a positive recreational activity for those living in India's slums was one of the five Short Film Challenge winning films at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. The Short Film Challenge was sponsored by the Gates Foundation, which sought documentaries focused around extreme hunger and poverty. All winning shorts in this category won $10,000 in prize money. Amazingly, the footage was filmed over one weekend and had no script.
The film starts with 19 y.o. Gani speaking: "I live in the corner of a slum. Earlier, I never liked the life I was leading. But after I found frisbee, it became a lot better." The rest of the flick shows youth as part of the Fly Wild Ultimate team playing and enjoying beach ultimate, and the sport giving purpose to these youths.

Oscar-Nominated Frisbee Film
Floating Free (IMDb), a film by Jerry Butts documenting the 1977 World Frisbee Championships, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Short Film, Live Action at the 1978 Academy Awards. Other nominees included The Absent-Minded Waiter, Notes on the Popular Arts, Spaceborne, and the eventual Oscar winner - I'll Find a Way.
Info: The Floating Free documentary (10:30) captures the various events during the 1977 World Frisbee Championships at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The footage may be grainy, yet it's clear the flying plastic disc - as the central character - is quite versatile. A varied soundtrack follows the quick shots of action from event to event, showcasing Guts, Ultimate (Penn State vs. Santa Barbara), Freestyle, and Frisbee Dogs - all played in front of an enormous, responsive crowd.

NetFlicks for Ultimate
With the popularity and stock of Ultimate game footage, it's great to be able to see video of Ultimate games. Skyd Magazine recently reported on a portal for Ultimate games called No Huck! ("NetFlicks" seems like a better name!!)
Having more and more Ultimate games available is the result of the proliferation of camera owners. Many thanks not only to the people holding the camera, and being able to record the inevitable awesome Ultimate play(s). Moreover, a huge appreciation to the video editors! You can now efficiently watch an elite-level Ultimate game in about half the time it's played -- Ironside v. Sockeye (30 minutes; 2012), or Southpaw v. Truck Stop (40 minutes; 2012).
Some suggestions for any/all Ultimate frisbee video portal sites.
Group the games based on their genre (examples: suspense thriller, comedy, melodrama, war film, spaghetti western, etc.), so viewers can choose the type of competition they seek to watch.
Add a category for the video length, so viewers can choose a selection based on the amount of time they have available to watch. (20-30 minutes; 31-40 mins, etc.)
Add a rating system similar to film's 5-star rating or Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer. Ratings will help the viewer understand how good the game is based on criteria (examples: video footage, weather factors, game action, score-keeping, etc.).
Help dictate what the rating system should be called by completing the survey below or here.
