Beau Kittredge Joins New York Empire for AUDL 2018 Season

According to Beau's self-published article on Skyd, he will be on the roster of the New York Empire for the 2018 season of American Ultimate Disc League. In his own words, Beau says: "I have no contract and no written agreement with the New York Empire." Previously, Beau has played for the San Jose Spiders (2014-15), Dallas Roughnecks (2016), and San Francisco FlameThrowers (2017).
New York finished 4th in the East Division with a (6-8) record in 2017, and missed the postseason for the first time in their 5 seasons.

In February 2018, Beau told Evan Lepler: "I have no idea. At this point, I honestly have no idea where I'm gonna play."

In January 2018, Beau wrote: "I will put a priority on playing in the league most willing to make pro ultimate a reality for everyone.

In 2018, I will play for free in the AUDL city most willing to help AUDLx [a mixed-gender league]. If that does not happen, I will play for the city most willing to give female athletes the resources, spotlight and media coverage they deserve."
Welcome to the AUDL East, Beau!

Beau Kittredge Deemed 'Fittest Athlete Alive' According to Outside Magazine

Beau Kittredge was profiled in Outside Magazine in June 2017 by author David Gessner in a piece called 'No Disc-respect.' The article says Beau "looks like an NFL wide receiver, sprints like an Olympian, and jumps like Jordan."

A companion article '24 Hours with the Fastest, Fittest, Most Explosive Ultimate Frisbee Player' delves into Beau's daily routine dishing him an insanely high compliment:
When you think of insanely fit athletes, who comes to mind? Odell Beckham? Lindsey Vonn? CrossFit Games champ Mat Fraser? What about Beau Kittredge, the two-time American Ultimate Disc League MVP? No? Well, the Alaska-born, San Francisco-based ultimate player might just be one of the fittest athletes alive.

Here's Beau's 14-hour day:

9 a.m: Wakeup, Stretch

9:30 a.m: Morning Stroll

10 a.m: Breakfast

11:15 a.m: Get Up
Beau: "Every hour, I'll get up, walk around, and maybe stretch for about five minutes." This kind of intermittent low-intensity exercise and mobility work has huge dividends in building and maintaining Kittredge's movement quality and preventing injuries, he says. Once he sits, he'll often place a lacrosse ball under his hamstrings or glutes.

1 p.m: Track Workout

2:15 p.m: Lunch
Beau: "I don’t really track my nutrition. I'm just constantly trying to get in more calories and drink more water."

4:15 p.m: Yoga
Beau: "I hate yoga, but I think it's a necessary evil."

6:00 p.m: Dinner

8:00 p.m: Weights Workout
Three times a week, usually between track days, Kittredge will hit the weight room after dinner.

9:30 p.m: Eat More
Beau: "I suck down a protein drink then lay on the couch for a while until I can move."

11:00 p.m: Bed

Beau Takes a Pay Cut in 2017 AUDL Season

As reported by Evan Lepler [Tuesday Toss; January 17, 2017], Beau Kittredge will join the San Francisco FlameThrowers for the AUDL 2017 season.

Beau is quoted as saying: "Last year, I tried to grow the sport with energy, money, and the all-important (Dallas Roughnecks owner) Jim [Gerencser] factor.  This year, I will get paid the same as everyone else on the team. This year, I will try to grow the sport with just love, putting together a team of people who want to win, love the sport, and each other."

His pro ultimate salary in 2016 was reportedly in the "ballpark" of $50,000 with the Dallas Roughnecks. His 2017 pay will probably be around $25-$75 per game for the FlameThrowers.

You saw the movie poster.

You've seen the movie trailer.

Now you can see the world premiere of Flatball, the documentary on Ultimate Frisbee is scheduled on Sunday, October 23 at 12:30pm at the the Carmel International Film Festival in California. Buy $10 tickets.

From the press release: Beau Kittredge, star of last summer's undefeated USA Men's Team at the London World Championships, exclaimed, "Finally, a film that explains the birth and quirks of the sport I love. It neatly ties the history to the future with the silky bow that is Alec Baldwin's voice. Even as a six-time world champion I didn't know the giants whose shoulders I stand upon. It's a special treat to have a great player like Dennis Warsen also have skills behind the camera; it allows the story to be told as only an Ultimate player could." And Dante Anderson, former Team Canada player and captain, called FLATBALL a "great flick: heroes, villains, movie stars, love, hate, war and peace, the thrill of victory, and the agony of losing your girlfriend by saying something on national TV."

Flatball listing in CIFF catalog

Alec Baldwin has been busy recently with a role in the animated film, The Boss Baby [Dreamworks] as well as playing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live.

Published Salary for Pro Ultimate Player

How many salaried players are needed to call AUDL a professional league? Well, we know of at least one who ekes out a living with his salary from an AUDL team.

In a late 2015 American Ultimate Disc League Tuesday Toss, Andrew Zill (owner of the San Jose Spiders) was quoted as saying: "I think this is a watershed moment for the league. Beau will be the first truly professional ultimate player in history, and I think that's a big deal" regarding Beau Kittredge's signing in the offseason with the Dallas Roughnecks.

However, the exact dollar amount had never been published. Go as far back as 2013, there was belief of a $40,000 contract for Brodie "Frisbee (It's not a Frisbee) Trickshooter" Smith.

Now, a March 25, 2016, article in Peninsula Press [a project of the Stanford Journalism Program] stated Beau's salary as "in the ballpark of" $50,000. The reliable source on the annual salary figure? The person who is paying that salaryJim Gerencser, owner of the Dallas Roughnecks (AUDL).

The article also indicates that Jimmy Mickle and Cassidy Rasmussen "make similarly high salaries, though less than Kittredge," and that their Mickle & Cassidy's contract is associated with Gerencser's non-proift Early Recognition Is Critical (E.R.I.C.).

Ultiworld mentions Beau took an easy day-to-day job with Nationwide Auto Services-again, an Gerencser-run company.

Callahan by Beau

Beau Kittredge of the San Jose Spiders caught a Callahan in last Sunday's AUDL game versus the Lions. The play which took less than 3 seconds has the makings of a segment on Sport Science.

The Salt Lake player establishes a pivot 10 yards before the endzone line and throws a backhand aimed toward a teammate in middle of the field.

Beau (#50 in black) immediately sniffs out the pass and sprints 10+ yards in the direction of the disc as the Lions receiver waits for the disc to arrive. Beau jump-lays out with outstretched arm for the disc and snags the disc one-handed (avoiding contact) as his momentum carries him 3 yards into the endzone for the score.

Review: San Francisco FlameThrowers (AUDL)

Part of the series critiquing the professional Ultimate team logos and nicknames.

Team: San Francisco FlameThrowers

Web: http://sfflamethrowers.com // twitter: @SFFlameThrowers

Representation: City // League: AUDL

Disc within logo?: No. // Ultimate element in team name?: No. (Except for "thrower")

Eli's Eval: Incorporating the Golden Gate into the top section of the shield is a brilliant stroke that is deftly handled. It is subtle enough that it may initially be read as strictly decorative, and works effectively to frame the team name, but also gives us geographic context. The colors are bright and bold (SF Giants!) without being hard to look at. The designer took the time make sure that lines and spaces are equal to give overall balance to the design.

Type is simple but it works. There is just enough whimsy in the R's to offset how truly basic this font is. The arch on the top of the team name is gentle but well executed. The drop-shadow on the "SF" is nice and adds some volume but the connection from the arm of the "F" to the flame could be a bit better; the subtle dip along the top interrupts the otherwise even rhythm of the drop-shadow. Where the mid-crossbar of the F stops and the flame starts, heading out to the edge of the shield, the line curves down ever-so-slightly.

:Eli's Grades:
Overall Grade: A-
On Logo: A-
On Typography: A-

Background by SLUDGE: A baseball term for a pitcher who can throw the ball very fast. Beau calls them the "Flamers." The flamethrower weapon is banned in California. Also has ties to the special occasion of "throwing fire" in RPS. (Fire beats rock, paper AND scissors.) Though, as we all know, fire can only be used once in an Ultimate players lifetime.

First impression(s) by SLUDGE: Still concerned about the spelling ("Flame Throwers" vs. "FlameThrowers"). Perhaps an allusion to North Carolina's elite men's club team, Ring of Fire. Gives a vibe of a Harley-Davidson dealership in San Fran.

What are you thoughts on this AUDL's team name & logo?

Beau Resembles a Simpsons Character

Likeness to a Simpsons character was mentioned in the San Jose Spiders' Beau-bblehead promotional video. The vest is very Nelson, but Beau's smile is so Bart.

D'OHn't let this opportunity pass to see them side-by-side:

Beau Kittredge Joins San Jose Spiders

Beau Kittredge, who played with San Francisco Dogfish (MLU) in 2013, signed with San Jose Spiders for their 2014 AUDL season. In honor of this big pro Ultimate league news, a revision to the AUDL logo is in order:

Does that make his autograph worth something more valuable?

Un-BEAU-lievably, the Spiders are offering this creative product - a Beau Bobblehead , or "Beaubblehead" - to buyers of season tickets.

Ultimate Blueprint by Beau

From Beau Kittredge's most recent Facebook posting
"...We should view the USAU, BULA, MLU, AUDL and any other ultimate organization like the walls of a house we are building that we don't have the exact blueprint for. Yes club ultimate is a strong foundation, it's important and solid and we all rely heavily upon it but we should still construct walls for our house. We shouldn't and can't all work on the same wall, I personally will help build each wall as best I can but I can only work on one at a time. Eventually I hope all the walls will come together to support a roof. Until then it is in our best interest to try to make every wall as strong as we can, to root for our friends who build other parts. It takes a lot of different talents, people, and professions to build a solid house but I am confident if we support each other we will all be able to live happily within ultimate at whatever level we wish..."

Ultimate Expressions

Beau Kittredge's first published article for SKYD magazine, 'A Dead Horse', includes a statement evocative of Ken Dobyns in 1989.

Beau: "Simply said, it's easier for me to say 'I love you' to ultimate than it is to my girlfriend."

Compare it to how Ken Dobyns prioritized his ultimate life:
Ken Dobyns: "1. Ultimate 2. Girlfriend 3. Family 4. Job 5. God"
