Fashion Statement on the Ultimate Field

FLASHBACK: The year was 2014. October. An ultimate team from Minneapolis challenges frisbee uniform norms.

FAST FORWARD: August 14, 2016 at the Chesapeake Open and a Truck Stop player wore this on the ultimate field...

How did this unconventional uniform choice happen? Some hypotheses:

A. Cranston forgot to put on shorts in the morning and all of his teammates, coaches, and friends colluded in not telling him. Observers, photographers, and opponents joined in on the collusion.

B. Cranston lost his shorts while on the D-line during a particularly athletic bid deep.

C. Cranston's shorts melted due to the high temperatures and became striped leggings.

D. Cranston is wearing shorts; they're underneath his yoga pants.

E. Cranston embraced fashion advice from Minneapolis Subzero.

Updated Chesapeake Open Logo Due to High Heat

The Chesapeake Open ultimate tournament (August 13-14) in Boyds Maryland was so hot, the TD's suspended play for over an hour. Fields were cleared and players were instructed to spend the break indoors to cool down. The forced intermission was more recess than rest as players engaged in basketball, volleyball, Spikeball, flutterguts, frisbee throwing, and football tossing at the open gym.

With temperatures pushing 100-degrees and a heat index of 100+, the tournament logo has been updated:

UltiStickers

Besides an Ultimate license plate, there were lots of vehicular displays of ulti pride on bumpers and in windows. Here are some spotted at the 2013 Chesapeake Invite:

Spirit Cheer Lip Sync

In the wake of Beyoncé lip-syncing the national anthem at the 2013's inauguration ceremony for President Obama, Ultimate Frisbee players are now coming forward with their own lip-sync stories.

Miming along to a team's 'Spirit Cheer' is not unheard after an Ultimate game. The Spirit Cheer is a demonstration of Spirit of the Game where teams cheer their opponent at the end of the game. Cheers, or "calls" in the UK, are often creative songs.

At the 2009 Chesapeake Open, a barely rehearsed post-game 'Spirit Cheer' was loudly chanted to Axis of C'ville. Players who knew the cheer positioned themselves near the front while one player stood in the back directly behind the team's tallest player.

A USAU Observer observed, "After three lines of this live performance, players from the other team began to question whether everyone was truly singing."

The identified player commented, "I felt rushed in trying to memorize four lines of rhyme scheme." He added, "I do recall announcing 'Prepare to receive!' as my contribution."

"He wasn't comfortable performing without a rehearsal," Ultimate teammates remarked. "We always knew that lip sync was a possibility."

After the tournament, a white board was procured to help reduce future lip syncing of Spirit Cheers.
