Results: WFDF World Ultimate Club Championships 2018

The WFDF World Ultimate Club championships concluded on Saturday and US-based club teams swept gold in every division (again). Over 120 club ultimate teams competed at this international tournament.


Women's Division
Seattle Riot (7) won 15-8 [8-4 half] over Medellin Revolution (5) to win back-to-back Club Worlds titles. Riot did not originally qualify for this tournament based on their finish at 2017 USA Ultimate Club Nationals.

Men's Division
San Francisco Revolver (1) won their 3rd consecutive WUCC title with a 15-13 win [8-7 half] over Sydney Colony (4). Previous championships by Revolver were won in 2010 and 2014.

Mixed Division
Seattle BFG (3) won 15-11 [8-6 half] over Boston Slow White (9) to win their 1st Club Worlds title. BFG went (5-0) in pool play with a +46 goal differential, and would win 5 more games in the elimination brackets to win the championship.

The next World Ultimate Club Championship will occur in 2022, though the location has yet to be determined.

The Championship Rivalry Between Boston Brute Squad and Seattle Riot

It began in August 2015 at that year's Pro Flight Finale in Blaine, Minnesota. Boston Brute Squad (2-seed) and Seattle Riot (3-seed) would face off in their first championship game. Including their meeting at the 2015 Pro Flight Finale, Boston and Seattle have met in 8 championship games. Their most recent meeting in a championship game at the TCT Pro Championships 2017 (formerly Pro Flight Finale) in September.

Boston has won 5 of the 8 versus Seattle in championship games, including Brute Squad's National titles in 2015 and 2016.

In 2015, Boston won both meetings against Seattle in the championship games of 2 events. Not shown is Boston's 10-9 pool play win over Riot at the Pro Flight Finale.
In 2016, Boston and Seattle met in 4 championship games; Riot won Pro-Elite Challenge and Pro Flight Finale, and Brute Squad won US Open and Nationals.
In 2017, Boston and Seattle have each won 1 championship event of a Triple Crown Tour event. The 2017 U.S. Open Club Championships in August was notable in that it was the first ultimate tournament that Seattle and Boston competed in but neither advanced to the championship game.

Overall, these two elite women's teams have been consistent finalists at Triple Crown Tour events over the past 3 seasons.

Triple Crown Tour Prize Money Leaders

A total of thirteen (13) club ultimate teams have already won prize money totaling $18,750 during the 2016 Triple Crown Tour regular season.  Four (4) teams have multiple TCT prize-money wins - Riot, Brute Squad, Slow White and Truck Stop. Still up for grabs is $3000 in each division for a win (1st) or place (2nd) at Nationals.

NOTE: No club team is eligible for winning the $2000 Triple Crown "bonus" since the same team has not won U.S. Open and Pro Flight Finale.

Squad Goals: Seattle Riot SOTG

Seattle Riot published an article about Spirit of the Game in USA Ultimate's magazine (Fall 2015 edition; pg 70) and charted their team's history of results along with recognition of their spirit.

Additionally, Riot wonderfully tracked their qualifying seasons (red dots), years when they reached the finals of a major tournament (black circle), and winning a championship (star) since the year 2000.

The article describes how Seattle women's club ultimate team prioritizes SOTG concludes with the following advice for ultimate players:

Love the game, meet your opponents, use a good tone, sometimes choose to agree, sometime choose to disagree, but most of all, have fun and spread the joy you have for this game every time you play!

Seattle Rainmakers Co-Coaches Announced

Seattle Rainmakers announced their head coaches will be Kate Kingery and Fiona McKibben - both assistant coaches from the 2015 Major League Ultimate season. Kingery and McKibeen were on the 2015 Seattle Riot (women's club ultimate team) roster, with Kingery captaining Riot in 2015.

KK and McKibben join the ranks of women Co-Coaches in the MLU along with New York Co-Coach Eileen Murray, who was announced as Rumble's Co-Coach in January 2016.

Pan American Ultimate Championships 2015 Results

Austin Tejas over DC-area Black Cans & Highlands 17-11 (9-7).

Women
Medellin Colombia Revolution over Madison Heist 17-9 (HT 9-6).

Open

Madison Club over Bogota Colombia Comunidad El Oso 13-12 (7-6 HT).

Mixed

Minneapolis Drag'n Thrust over Austin Doubledown 17-11 (9-5 HT).

Players from winnings teams took home gold medals while each team was awarded this artsy trophy.

"Free Random Exposure" for Ultimate

As 48 teams start heading to Frisco, Texas, for USA Ultimate's National Championships, here is some advice for all ultimate teams to consider during their travels:

Dom of Seattle Riot had a great idea last year. Let's keep up the momentum this season!

you know how women's ultimate is trying to promote exposure to young girls and parents to get these girls excited about playing ultimate...

did you know that portland state has a women's softball team and that wachusett has a men's lacrosse team? me neither, nor did I care until I noticed on my last couple of flights that everyone (airport security, random strangers) were asking them questions (did you win? what position do you play?) all because they all were traveling in team gear.

I propose that we ask our teammates to make a small effort to travel in our awesome team gear AND that we ask fellow women's club teams to travel in their team gear, too.

some individuals already do it but if we could get a lot of the teams doing it, people notice. it's a small effortless act that I think might actually give women's ultimate some free random exposure and get people to ask us questions about the sport that we love so much. 

nothing mandatory or special, just a soft request with a purpose behind. we all have our tank tops and sweatshirts and hats and comfy sweatpants and we're often sharing a flight with our teammates.
