Tournament: Lost

4 scheduled games on Saturday; 3 were lost.

In Game #1, Sludge paced slowly down 0-2. Evening @ 2’s, brown’s zone began to emerge, but remained more effective near/at the goal line than in the field at-large. Sludge turnovers resembled the inventory at Anna Luna’s Lemonade stand - plentiful.

Down 7-8, Sludge miraculously tied it @ 9-9 with a game to 10. Loss 9-10.

Stephen Colbert sez: If life gives you lemons, save the receipt!
-->> Sludge gave them a run for their money

By Game #2, Sludge’s offense warmed up versus Jhacmmer. 1-0, 3-3, 5-5. Yet, holes in the zone D allowed these Gen Y’ers an easy playground. After 3 weak points, "empty" could have been aptly applied to the lemonade bottles and to Sludge’s offense; good, bad, respectively. 5-8.

By the second half, brown was unable to hatch any readjustments. Thus, Sludge’s offense unfortunately mirrored the Lemonade stand’s options – nice stack (of cups), no cuts (in pricing). Loss 8-11.

-->> In Game #2, Sludge’s offense was jumbled

Game #3’s energy started to feel vintage Sludge, taking a 5-2 lead with decisive points; plus an effective zone, preventing throwing lanes and disrupting flow. Things then got sticky, like when you spill lemonade on your hands. 6-3, 7-5, 7-8. Cleanup in Field #1!

Tied @ 9’s, CHMP shook off their bye hangover as Sludge’s 3-consecutive-games-legs could only muster near points. Loss 9-11.

-->> Sludge’s incomplete upset hurt.

The next game was matched up with a savage ReRun who was also 0-3, which meant it was an inconsequential (to the next round) game. RR officially forfeited which meant Sludge did not lose game #4. Forfeited Non-Loss.

Notes: Great fun, as always, to spend the day with Sludge! Thanks to all who were present/rearranged their sched to appear - MattHew, CHris, Bucci, RacHel, Sarah, Andrew, MicHael, David, Jen, Mike, Christy, Brian & Steve.

Week 8: You Don’t Know the Half of It

wind.discBetween a gust and a windy place is where Sludge found themselves at Anacostia Park on Saturday. Discs were caught more by the wind than in-hand.

At 0-1, Sludge would even the score 7 times. The prevailing wind sailed the FLYING DebrISC to the end zone furthest away from the river – where each of the first 14 points was scored. Hats off to Sludge who did a beaufort-ul job of winning the near up-wind points game. The most exhausting part about the game was either chasing after the downwind overthrown disc, or waiting for the chasedowns.
Then, Sludge finally broke wind! The elusive up-wind point felt accelerating! 8-7 at half. And brown would now receive the 2nd half pull. Huh?

Instead, Walkoshame sKNOTily interpreted that the agreed-upon soft cap (maximum score limit) somehow voids any halftime (when one team’s score first reaches or exceeds the half of the game total).

So, the first half continued rolling as did the near ‘Near Gale’ conditions. Sludge then breezily blew through the next 3 points. Win 10-7.

NOTE: Thanks to La Lomita Dos for their post-game supplies.

Week 7: Unslick

Difficulties strengthen the mind, as well as labor does the body.
-- Seneca

In other words...A mustard sandwich? Yeah, it's OK, but we could do better.

At minutes past noon on May day, the opponent had lean numbers as Sludge began to overflow with men. Team captains assured the numbers imbalance was manageable, not catastrophic. Game authorities were content to let the normally named team transform into harshmellohs with extra fellows while keeping an eye on a game start.

But down 0-2, there was instant criticism of a slow response by the Sludge men, especially in the cutting department. Christy and Rachel were savage and played every single point super-awesomely awesome.

A pivot point came @ 4-7. That’s when brown learned the value of valuing the disc and poured it on to tie it @ 7’s.

Down 1 at half, CHarlie set in motion a larger mobilization, pledging to deploy “every single available resource” to the field and ordering a less-suckage mandate in the next half. Yet, any moMENtum was offset by the lingering Congo line to Suckiness.

There were calls to consider drilling - offshore, inland, in sky, below ground, wherever - for the basics of running, catching, throwing. 9-10. There remained were no answers for the cleanup. Throws were ragged; catches were just out of reach or simply messily dropped.

At 11-12, the “ample time” to protect brown’s coasting behind the lead were newly alarming. Thoughts of a point overflow naturally began to be assessed.

Sludge then realized their bleak was worse larger than they had been led to believe, and after 26 game points of reassuring words gave way to a 2-minute drill mayday response. Win 15-13.

Week 6: What "E" Day

edaypicsAndrew recaps...
On April 24, Sludge belatedly celebrated Earth Day with a short trip to one of its favorite places on Earth. The normally brown Polo fields were uncharacteristically green and matched the uniforms of our opponents, Absyntheminded. Would this prove to be a bad omen for Sludge or would the team find strength in the fact that most of its players were born before the first Earth Day was celebrated?

The threat of rain appeared to keep tourists away, but could not stop Russ' uncle (and his amazing technocolor bike helmet) from cheering for Sludge. After settling in with a smooth blend of classic zone D (despite only a slight breeze) and a splash of person defense, a 4-4 start turned into a 8-5 halftime advantage for Sludge as its 'just good enough' offense mostly took care of the disc and capitalized on forced and unforced turnovers. Starting the 2nd half on O, Sludge stayed in its happy place while Absynthe appeared to be feeling the effects of their long, first game. Sludge wins 15-6, a total team effort with everyone involved in defense, throwing scores, and catching scores.

Overheard by MattHew...one Absinthe player, clearly impressed with brown's rapid scoring efficiency, said with a sheepish smile, "Thanks for making it painless."

Week 5: wIndeed

windbee
Saturday's game blew in with a fairly steady wind stream. The first 3 points endured about 30 minutes with Sludge slightly OFF-ense. Wind blew, yet throws were denied flow. Up-wind/down-wind wasn't a factor as much as the gusty challenge of being 1) catch-nimble and 2) throw-hopeful. Points were traded in the first half with neither chompp, nor brown truly prevailing. 1-1, 4-2, 6-4.

Sludge breezed into half up 4 points, and then galed to a 10-4 lead. Bucci, Jen Sarah & Rachel flexed their gusted D skills to help prevent any up field throws. Andrew, Joe and David supplied brOwn jet stream with controlled, continuous medium-to-short passing. The wind was friendly in the 2nd half as a Nigel overthrow to CHris, which MicHael caught & then threw to Rachel for a bounding score.

To cap the game, Matthew threw a huck to Russ. Win 15-7.

Sludge, again, sweetly celebrated the end of the game with lightly frosted chocolate cupcakes from Jen.

Week 4: Hot Tub Time Machine

hottubWith nearly all of Sludge – Amelia, Andrew, Anna, Brian, Charlie, Chris, Christy, Daniel, David, Jake, Jen, Joe, Keller, MattHew, Meg, MicHael, Mike, Nigel, Rachel, Russ, Sarah & Steve – blossoming for Saturday’s game, it was simply a beautiful sight. Like everyone knew there’d be a snack at the end of the game. As If!

Confirming the lack of land surveyors on the team, the field was finally sited aside the FDR Memorial due to Polo Field land issues. So many Sludge, so little room to grab the disc at the opening cheer, so great!

Sludge began strong and gobbled up all of Fitin’ Carrotz turnovers thanks to brown’s pressure zone; effectively preventing any sustained flow and long throws by the other team. 2-1, 3-1, 4-1. Another turnover? All like No Way! 6-1. Sludge like totally was Izod-ing all the way to half as a pass to Jen was brushed to CHris to make it 8-2.

Where some points were unrulely gnarly – feisty rule calls &/or picks, others were highly competitive and back-&-forth. The outcome may have been different if the 2nd half was the first half.

At 11-3, still atop the leader board, Sludge began to move like trees. Like everyone had forgotten there was gonna be a secret sweet treat at game’s end. As If! The Biting-Off-Less-Than-You-Can-Chew approach to offense worked really well for the team in the lead.

At 13-7, Sludge put the final crimp on any FiCa comeback with 2 scores by Sarah. Cool Beans! Win 15-7.

Week 3: Bunny Business

Sludge's slow arrival would not be reflective of the first half's first half. Brown hopped to a 4-0 lead thanks to a savage zone D by Chris, CHarlie, Hectah [sic], Steve, Joe, Sarah & Rachel.

More of the colony showed up. Upon MattHew's arrival, his first throw increased the lead to 5-2. When Jen & Brian appeared, Sludge D continued their egg-asperate goal line stances. Though, young Toast slowly caught up to brown.

Down 1 at half, Sludge never sacrificed the O-pportunity symbolizing an oxygen efficient, patient (walking) offense toward the goal. Relying on a pinch middle zone, their opponents had to work for their points.LnL

Game action was all around high-quality egg-cluding one "sloppy" point; a pass from Jen over to CH who stepped in the only mud puddle in the end zone. 12-10.

Egged on by a youthful Chicagoan cheering section, Sludge leavened to the occasion over Toast. Win 15-12.

Week 2: Re-form

hrAfter a back-and-forth 15 points which saw some ?uestionable zone by Sludge picked methodically by idunno; Sarah catching a score & throwing for a score (different points); and an impatience of brown O... Sludge was down 7-8.

Sludge sought reform! They voted favorably to continue passing "add-ons" to their point total. Brian, Joe, Matthew & Jen helped positively spin the disc. One key passage was a cross-filed hammer to Nigel, an up-field throw to Chris, & finally a score to MicHael. By the time Sue arrived, all were voting YEA for Sludge's strengthening disc protection and lowering costly points. 9-8. 9-9. 12-10.

For point #13, Bucci cut to the near cone in the end zone where she stalled the disc in one hand for a score. Despite the barrage of amendments, Sludge cotinued their steady O. Steve (finally) scored his first point for Sludge late in the 2nd half.

With reconciliation in sight, CHarlie caught the victorious score. Win 15-11.

Time: 4:00 pm EDT

Where: Montgomery Hills (MD)

Week 1: InPrius-ive

nonstopBrakes were applied before the first game revved up. First, finding the new field posed a challenge, and then, waiting an extra hour to gape over the flat area covered in a natural green-toned turf (our field space). Plus a snack bar & indoor restrooms; unconnectedly located of one another.

Sludge welcomed the return of Jen as Bucci showed off her new cleats. Known for starting with the parking brake on, it was a relief to see point #1 favored brown.

Judging by the first few points, it looked like this game was gonna use all the fuel in the tank. At 4-2, Sludge experienced a sudden acceleration issue which in no way could be blamed on floor mats. Besides an unsuccessful Mike-to-Christy hammer score attempt, Sludge's offensive balance really impressed. Also, Rachel had a land-on-head layout for an early score. Up 5 at half.

Sludge guzzled up Shamrockoll’s unforced errors.

After halftime, Sludge experienced a minor faulty electronic throttle control causing the dashboard to light up. 11-5, 13-8. Sludge regained traction with Nigel and Matthew in mid-season form. Brian skyed for a disc resulting in a dramatic catch.

From the sidelines, Sludge’s "patience" may have been I'm-not-prepared-to-cut...yet-I-sincerely-hope-someone-else-moves, thereby waiting until the last possible moment (stalling 8...) to dart to an open spot, usually resulting in a positive yardage play. Win 15-8.

All things being Spring Equinox, Sludge had a great showing – both on and off the field. Thanks to Jake, Keller, Daniel and Anna for their support.

Sludge Census

senseiCHarlie made a recent plea for all of Sludge to participate in The SL-ensus. This year's online process system replaces the past system where teams could sign-up by email & then rely on the team captain - who may or may not be repaid - to pay the team reg fee. The 2010 era requires each individual to register and pay $25.00 for the upcoming season.

CH said "It's your civic duty. I encourage full participation. And if you don't, then fine. The SL-ensus is like a photo, a snapshot in time.”
