DC Scandal Seeded #1 at International Ultimate Tournament

Washington, DC's elite women's ultimate team, Scandal, is seeded #1 IN THE WORLD at the 2014 World Ultimate Club Championships (WUCC). The multi-day, international WUCC tournament is hosted from August 2 - 9 in Lecco, Italy.

Scandal is ranked at the top as a result of winning the 2013 USA Ultimate Championship in October 2013. Since then, Mayor Gray proclaimed it "SCANDAL WOMEN'S ULTIMATE FRISBEE TEAM DAY" and the D.C. Council has passed a resolution recognizing the achievement by this DC sports team.

August 8
Scandal were down 5-9 and eventually lost by 2 to Riot, 11-13, in the WUCC semifinals.

In the bronze medal game (3rd place), Scandal won 17-10 over Showdown.

August 7

On Thursday, Scandal went undefeated in Pool J with a 13-7 win over Iceni. Scandal advanced with an overall (6-0) record to the 8-team playoffs as the #1 seed.

In their quarters matchup, Scandal won 17-6  over Medellín Revolution (Colombia). Scandal faces Seattle Riot (USA) in the semifinals on Friday.

August 6
On Wednesday in Pool J, DC Scandal won 11-10 over Texas Showdown, and won again 15-7 over Cosmic Girls.

August 5
On Tuesday, Scandal won 15-2 victories over YAKA (France), and then Catarinas (Mexico).

Scandal posts a +37 goal difference - the best in the Women's Division, after 3 games.

8 = least goals allowed by Scandal, least amount in the Women's Division after first-round pools.

Scandal is the only women's ultimate team to post single digits in goal allowance (after 3 games).

With a (3-0) record, Scandal wins Pool A and advances to Power Pool J. On Wednesday, Scandal is scheduled to play Showdown (Texas; 2-1), and then Cosmic Girls (Russia; 2-1). Iceni (Great Britain; 3-0) rounds out the other team in the pool.

August 4
On Monday, Scandal won 15-4 over Fusion (Canada).

August 3
Sunday's games were cancelled due to weather.

Forty (40) of the 128 WUCC teams will be competing in the women's division at WFDF's 2018 World Ultimate Club Championships, July 14-21, in Cincinnati. Host country United States will be represented with the most teams at the international ultimate tournament; Canada and Japan are each sending 4 teams. Overall, twenty-one (21) different countries are represented in the women's division.

DC Scandal - 2013 Ultimate Champions

DC Scandal wins 2013 USA Ultimate Championship

Washington DC's women's ultimate team - Scandal - won the 2013 USA Ultimate National Championships on October 20th. Ranked 3rd in the nation going into the postseason, DC Scandal went 7-0 over the 4-day tournament. This is Scandal's first-ever title, as well as the first championship for a Washington, DC club ultimate team.

The 2013 Women's Championship game was broadcast by ESPN3. Leading 8-3 at halftime in the finals, Scandal won 14-7, beating the 7-time champion San Francisco Fury.

Scandal posted an impressive 41-5 record this year during the entire Triple Crown Tour, played from June through October. Scandal placed second during two in-season tournaments; once at USA Ultimate US Open Championships (July 2013), and, again at Pro Flight finale (Sept 2013). They won four tournaments during the 2013 season - Winston Cup Challenge (June); Chesapeake Invite (August); Virginia Fusion (September); and Mid-Atlantic Regionals (Sept).

These athletic players - coached by Mike LoPresti & Alex "Dutchy" Ghesquiere, and captained by "Opi" Payne & Molly Roy - competed locally, on the east coast and in California. By winning the postseason tournament in Frisco, Texas, the Scandal team won a total of $2000 in prize money.

Rob Corddry Wished He Invented the Frisbee

Debonair funnyman Rob Corddry admits he wished he invented the Frisbee in a recent interview on Alicia Menendez Tonight.

Corddry while promoting Hot Tub Time Machine 2, is asked a hypothetical question: "If you could invent something - go back in real life - what would you invent?"

Various Lazy's album "Lame Sick or Lazy" is one of the most unusual albums to be made by a Idahoan musician. The engineering background colors his songwriting - an eccentric fusion of rock, country, bluegrass, jazz and, well, whatever else you think you hear.

Like its inspiration - Ultimate Frisbee - "Pocketful of Swayze" brims with jam band-blues energy. Filled with the lingo of the sport, it's based on a saying that Maestas and his buddies used while chasing discs in Ann Morrison Park.

Week 6: ONE outta Two

The forecast leading up to Saturday was stormy weather. Regardless of the weather, hung over this game was a cloud – would it be a dark or would it be a fluffy, white one?

There was a playoff scene happening at Lake Fairfax as players/teams streamed onto the green open space & just wandered. Why is it that the field you're playing on is always the farthest from where you parked @ Lake Fairfax? From the first pull, Sludge's zoney ways that we know & adore returned. SoliD really Stepped It Up. It was an impressive shutDown of any up field throws, courtesy of the cup.

With a controlled pace to the game, Sludge excelled with turnover creations, then transitioning into catch-&-pass O. Sludge nicely spread the CSinners from sideline-to-sideline with rotating short cuts for gain and always moving the disc forward.

However, it was quiet; maybe too quiet. Remember when you used Online Bill Pay for the first time? Ya know, everything appears to work real easy; maybe too easily? So, all transactions are deliberate, and checked (& announced after every single score). True, you might make an oopsie, you just don't want it an extra zero faux pas.

Well, there was no stopping it...the eff epp-bomb detonated & was heard loud and clear by everyone of all ages on the sidelines. The game continued on with an R-rating due to inflammatory language. Finally, the ordeal was punctuated by Gayle's game-ending catch. Game Over, 15-8.

Lessons Learned from this Game:
1-Don't get stall counted when you're on your own goal line.
2-Don't get stall counted at the start of the 2nd half.
3-Don't combine 1 & 2.

After the more important game was done [& won], Sludge moved to the next field to play Cold Fusion. CF's MO: zone-based D, quick-to-the-disc O. BTW, their oldest player JUST turned twenty-seven (27)...born in 1980!


First half: ???...Hmmm, totally blanking on the details. Oh, did you know David brought doughnuts on Saturday?

Sludge's O labored right away and the struggles at the goal line were indicative of the game. In the second half, Sludge finally found some holes & scored 5 total points. All I'm saying is the Iraqi Border Patrol could learn something from CF's goal line stance.

One-out-of-2 ain't bad especially when the 1 is the more desirable outcome.
