Week 2: Re-form
After a back-and-forth 15 points which saw some ?uestionable zone by Sludge picked methodically by idunno; Sarah catching a score & throwing for a score (different points); and an impatience of brown O... Sludge was down 7-8.
Sludge sought reform! They voted favorably to continue passing "add-ons" to their point total. Brian, Joe, Matthew & Jen helped positively spin the disc. One key passage was a cross-filed hammer to Nigel, an up-field throw to Chris, & finally a score to MicHael. By the time Sue arrived, all were voting YEA for Sludge's strengthening disc protection and lowering costly points. 9-8. 9-9. 12-10.
For point #13, Bucci cut to the near cone in the end zone where she stalled the disc in one hand for a score. Despite the barrage of amendments, Sludge cotinued their steady O. Steve (finally) scored his first point for Sludge late in the 2nd half.
With reconciliation in sight, CHarlie caught the victorious score. Win 15-11.

Week 1: InPrius-ive
Brakes were applied before the first game revved up. First, finding the new field posed a challenge, and then, waiting an extra hour to gape over the flat area covered in a natural green-toned turf (our field space). Plus a snack bar & indoor restrooms; unconnectedly located of one another.
Sludge welcomed the return of Jen as Bucci showed off her new cleats. Known for starting with the parking brake on, it was a relief to see point #1 favored brown.
Judging by the first few points, it looked like this game was gonna use all the fuel in the tank. At 4-2, Sludge experienced a sudden acceleration issue which in no way could be blamed on floor mats. Besides an unsuccessful Mike-to-Christy hammer score attempt, Sludge's offensive balance really impressed. Also, Rachel had a land-on-head layout for an early score. Up 5 at half.
Sludge guzzled up Shamrockoll’s unforced errors.
After halftime, Sludge experienced a minor faulty electronic throttle control causing the dashboard to light up. 11-5, 13-8. Sludge regained traction with Nigel and Matthew in mid-season form. Brian skyed for a disc resulting in a dramatic catch.
From the sidelines, Sludge’s "patience" may have been I'm-not-prepared-to-cut...yet-I-sincerely-hope-someone-else-moves, thereby waiting until the last possible moment (stalling 8...) to dart to an open spot, usually resulting in a positive yardage play. Win 15-8.
All things being Spring Equinox, Sludge had a great showing – both on and off the field. Thanks to Jake, Keller, Daniel and Anna for their support.

Run Around
Six thousand two hundred and forty-nine half-marathoners runners crossed the finished line at the 5th annual CFBCBS National Half Marathon last Saturday. The marathon is the only one to be run entirely within the District of Columbia & has the "fastest looped course in the country." Runners from 49 states and 27 countries ran the race.
Gayle, a resident of the federal territory of DC, began the race at RFK and ran the 13.1-mile loop, completing the course at RFK. A great day to run around Washington D.C.

This Land is Our Land
The lack of idling buses was one major benefit of the MLK project. There were drawbacks -- grinding up the NE corner of our open space, taking away car parking options, blocking off a thoroughfare, creating an unsightly barrier where frisbees may fly into yet never fly out, to name a few.
And now this...the latest encroachment onto weekend pickup fields has marked its territory at the southern end of the Polo Fields, parallel to Ohio Drive.

Sludge Census
CHarlie made a recent plea for all of Sludge to participate in The SL-ensus. This year's online process system replaces the past system where teams could sign-up by email & then rely on the team captain - who may or may not be repaid - to pay the team reg fee. The 2010 era requires each individual to register and pay $25.00 for the upcoming season.
CH said "It's your civic duty. I encourage full participation. And if you don't, then fine. The SL-ensus is like a photo, a snapshot in time.”

ZG responded:

Head Case
This case may lay the precedent for potential lawsuit by sharks, er laywers, this shark.
Woman hit in head with Frisbee wants city to pay [OCReg]
HUNTINGTON BEACH– A woman hit in the face with a golf disc in Huntington Beach Central Park wants the city to cover $550 in medical expenses, according to a claim filed with the city.
Ariana Benavente, 40, of Alpine, filed a claim on Jan. 4 saying a rogue golf disc from the nearby Disc Golf Course hit her in the face, resulting in "internal trauma to the head, nose and eye," the claim says.
A woman play Disc Golf in Huntington Beach Central Park. A woman is asking for $550 saying there is no protective barriers to keep the weighted frisbees in the course perimeters.
Benavente said she was walking in the park on Oct. 17 for a Brain Tumor Foundation event, and there was not a proper barrier around the course to prevent the incident. She was dazed and shocked by the blow and was taken to a Fountain Valley hospital emergency room, the claim says.
Claims are generally precursors to lawsuits. City officials said the claim is currently being investigated and that preliminary information "indicates the that the subject park where the accident occured is not owned, controlled or maintained by the city", officials said. Benavente wrote in the claim that she is still having symptoms from the incident and is under medical care.

Divers find shark with ring around its neck [nbc . 03.3.10]
You have to see it to believe it. And once you see it, you still might not believe it.
South Florida divers John Dickinson and Chip Garber say they had a close encounter with a nurse shark sporting a large Frisbee-like ring (aerobie) around its neck. The men were with a group diving off Palm Beach and caught the incident on tape.
Garber made the brave move of approaching the shark from behind and was able to remove the ring. See the video of the defender stripping the shark of thediscaerobie.

Beer, Sludge? OK! ... Beer sludge? No, thank you.
Beer Sludge to Fish Food [cnn]
Beer Sludge to Fish Food [cnn]
Biologist Andrew Logan turns waste from breweries into food for farmed seafood.
Logan resides in Idaho Springs, Colorado. Perhaps some of his inspiration came from several locally brewed beers at the Tommyknocker Brewery and Pub. His company Oberon FMR has developed a bacteria that can turn food based waste water to high protein flakes. Mr. Logan and company are on to something. The CNNMoney.com story reports that “By law, breweries and foodmakers must find safe removal solutions for wastewater; hauling it away and composting it (or, in winter, storing it)...” That gets expensive.
After using waste water from the New Belgium Brewery in a successful pilot project the project is getting legs, or should we say fins. A recent contract with another Colorado based brewery, MillerCoors will supply 5,000 tons of sludge that will be turned into 6,000 tons of food flakes.
What is beer sludge? It’s not spent grain. Spent grain goes directly to supplement animal feed. Beer sludge is a combination of yeast, protein and organic matter from grains and the fermentation process. It all get’s drained out of tanks and beer lines and is reduced to a sludge. As an organic and unstable sludge it is as an unpleasant a mixture as the name implies. You can’t just rinse it down the drain if you’re producing a lot of beer.
